Am I missing something here, I know of no one who approves of or embraces war (except maybe the chickenhawks on the right who love to see others do the fighting). A foreign policy is much more complex than war. As for the protesters maybe after ten years they realized it was futile and they had to get on with their lives and careers.

Conversely, I observe many die-hard hawks softening their warlike stance.

Perhaps a reactionary silver lining amidst partisanship :idontno:

Can't speak for all the protesters, but IMO once you have someone in office committed to diplomacy, troop removal, and NOT starting more wars, the need to protest dwindles.

Sort of like nagging someone to go to the doctor for a check-up - once they choose a doctor and have the appointment on their calender there's better uses for your time and energy.

Obama escalated the war in Afghanistan, and continued the draw down in Iraq Bush started. So I don't see how his stance has changed anything. (I'm also not faulting on that.) I just find it funny that as soon as he was election, the anti-war crowd evaporated, which makes me wonder if they were ever really committed in the first place.

The practice of quarantining fizzled with the development of vaccines.

Having a president in office who doesn't treat world politics like a John Wayne movie probably has something to do with it. Diplomacy had been a greatly under utilized tool until recently.

Not true, the anti-war crowd is likely larger than it ever was, they just don't go to protest rallys.

I don't think most Americans realize how incredibly unpopular Bush and his policies were abroad - even in ally countries who had personnel helping us fight in Iraq.

..and stood by silently while their new President escalated the war in Afghanistan. That was the whole point Reason was trying to make.

Well, if your team hadn't taken their eye off the ball.

But here's one for you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protests_against_the_War_in_Afghanistan_(2001–present)

On Saturday March 20, 2010, an estimated 10,000 demonstrators marched through downtown Washington D.C. to protest the U.S.-led invasions and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The crowd, stretching about four blocks long, started at Lafayette Square, stopping in front of Halliburton's offices and the Mortgage Bankers Association's building, and ended at the White House. Protesters contrasted the financial funding of the two American wars to the lack of money for health care, job growth, and cash-strapped local governments and school systems. Protest signs included "Healthcare not warfare" and "Drop tuition, not bombs", and marchers shouted:[62]
"Money for jobs and education, not more war and occupation!"

 Most people don't march in protest but at least they didn't encourage him like conservatives did Bush!

I have to say I am surprised with how many people are giving Obama any credit in this department with a straight face. I voted for him, but he deserves nothing but scorn in regard to Afghanistan, and as 30A pointed out withdrawal in Iraq was in place before he took over. The international community's complete 180 towards an America with a virtually identical foreign policy is hardly surprising. Nobel Peace prize anyone?

Obama ran with a signal to the military industrial complex "Iraq bad (wink)- we're taking our eye off the ball in Afghanistan!" and he has made good on his implicit promise to them to continue raiding the coffers of the American taxpayer in order to line their pockets. I voted for the guy and am certainly no Republican, but this is reality.

six. I'm not surprised you wouldn't know, the media stopped reporting on this after Obama won.

I think four of those who died last week were Special Ops soldiers based out of Eglin AFB. That Special Ops unit loses many soldiers. In 2011, the Special Ops campus will be completed and we will have one of only three Special Ops bases for the US military in the world. They reportedly lose more troops in battle than any other.

Obama's stump speech was made much of anti-war rhetoric, which I knew was a lie, even then. His ramp up of troops proved it. Nothing other than what I expected, and nothing more than McCain would have done. However, I wish it were different.

Diplomacy doesn't work with certain people. The problem is some people think everyone can be reasoned with and lack the ability to recognize when it won't. This inability leads to the largest loss of life. Some Countries may not have liked Bush but they respected him unlike Obama.

I guess Chemical weapons aren't a concern to you. The guy was killing thousands of his own people. You should count your blessings you weren't born there.

Yes, our non-partisan media stopped reporting the deaths after Obama was elected. They know your stupid and if they stop reporting it you'll forget about it or worse think things are going better. The deaths continue to mount...

This was reported 8/3/2010 in the Lakeland Times not to be confused with the unbiased NY Times.

"The count is mounting under the Obama administration. In the 18 months Obama has been president, 557 Americans have died. That compares to 655 U.S. deaths in the eight years of the Bush administration.

Compared another way, an average of 6.8 deaths occurred per month during the Bush years; the monthly average during Obama's tenure is 30.9, more than four times higher.

What's more, the count does not include hundreds of contractor deaths in the country. As Kristina Wong of ABC News reported last week, 521 contractors have been killed, 332 of those in the last year, an increase over the previous year of 175 percent.
