I'm not much of a celebrity watcher, unless it has to do with food. So I learned today that Emeril Lagasse has purchased two properties in Sandestin (recently married to someone in the Lovelace family?). Now this may be old news to super celeb sleuths so if so I apologize for being late with the news.
Also a rumor that he will be doing a demo at Gerard's in Baytowne sometime soon.

i liked him a lot better when he wasn't so popular. when he first opened his place at the mgm grand in vegas we stopped by to buy a plate, and he happened to be there. he came out and signed the plate and talked to us for a good bit, seemed surprised someone was buying his stuff. ... wonder if he's still like that ?

I still like him. And his restaurants are great. I hope he's still nice.

We had dinner at Emeril's in the MGM in '97 and it was very good. Also at NOLA. We still have not been to Delmonicos in N.O. which is reputed to be quite good.

Been to the MGM and Orlando. Both excellent...

delmonico's at the venetian was hands down the best meal we had ever had - until we went to the copper grill last fall in destin - oh my god !

Tell about the Copper Grill. We've thought about it but heard it is kind of touristy & show as opposed to food quality.

Someone told me that the Copper Grill was a MUST but I haven't tried it yet.

we had an excellent meal there, the steaks were cooked to perfection, we had a sampler platter for a side that had 5 different things on it. the appletini's were to die for, mr audie had tiramisu for dessert that he said was wonderful, and the service was also excellent. kinda expensive but much better than the marlin grille in baytowne.

Delmonico and the Copper Grill mentioned in the same breath just aint right. Please stop

Audie, you are one big celebrity magnet. First Emeril, then Michael York, and who next? Do you mind if I follow you around for a while?

Audie, for God's sake, please, if you want good dining and not just food that tastes good, come visit us here in NOLA. I just looked at the Copper Grill's website inviting the masses in Destin, Richmond and Birmingham to celebrate Mother's Day and Prom 2007 at the Copper Grill. I know, I know, if you like it, enjoy it...it just breaks my heart as somebody who knows a few people in the restaurant biz to see how religiously these souless chainers are patronized. In fact, they just had a big food convention here in town;a participant was talking about the Sysco Food Systems machine right now-they dump cheap, frozen foods off at the door of Applebees, Red Lobster, Chili's and the usual suspects, and the food is BOILED IN BAGS, then plated. They have the masses figured out so precisely that the chains are singlehandedly doing away with bread before your meal arrives (makes it more likely you will not order dessert, makes it more likely you will distract your server who is on the clock to get a take-out carton which of course costs $)! I am a food snob, I know, I am just saying that there are so many mom and pop/indy restauranteurs in SOWAL that provide better food and service than Copper Grill.

good gravy marie - calm down skunky ! i hate to bring this up but i can't eat cajun - it has awful effects on me, so i don't know how i'd do in nola. i do like red beans and rice tho. we just go wherever strikes our fancy. we like meat and potatoes, nothing too fancy, and i don't do fish, so we find places that have something for both of us...

think Macaroni Grill doing steaks with Christmas lights embedded in the dark ceiling (dining under the stars!). Seriously. If you want a steak in SOWAL, I am pretty sure you can indulge at Yianni's, Borago(?), Cafe Tango(?) and support your friendly local restaurant operator! Come to think of it, where can you get a good steak in SOWAL?

i had a decent one at yannis last time we were there. smiling fish had pretty good ones too, but haven't eaten there for a while. we usually buy some steaks down there and cook out a night or two on the mini-egg....

drsvelte - I had not heard this. but I do know emeril has been a visitor in sowal quite a few times.
I can hardly stand to watch him on tv but LOVE his recipes - I frequently pull them from the internet.

Oh Audie, contrary to Hollywood's portrayal of the situation, NOLA isn't a Cajun town and has few Cajun eateries. The best stuff here is Creole food, which is sort of a fusion of southern and European (French and Spanish) cuisine. Emeril got his first big break at Commander's Palace, a mecca of Creole cooking. If you like Emeril's fare, you like Creole cooking.

Hey, you got an egg? I am itching to get one of those things once we settle down someplace longer than 9 months. I hear they are AWESOME!

we'll do some thinking on this - already got our trips planned for next year, don't think we are even gonna get to sowal next year.
glad to know i wouldn't have to eat cajun - it makes my lips and tongue swell, and hurts all the way down and out....

I wouldn't buy a steak at any of these places (esp yianni's). maybe a veal chop at borago (yum). the best steak we've had in sowal is Pandora's and D&K Cafe. we hear its worth the drive into Destin to Destin Chops for a really good steak (this has always been the case but we just can't seem to drive that far...)

oh my god - if you ever meet mr audie as him about his egg - he will love you for life....
seriously - you cannot make a bad meal on the egg. he's made pizza, meatloaf, steaks, chicken, ribs, shrimp, fish. everything is delicious. my favorite is meatloaf cooked over hickory chips.....and his provolone burgers. ok i'm hungry again.....

how is destin chops ? we've never tried it, is it a fancy place ? we had sirloin strips at yanni's and they were decent for what they were. we thought the steaks at pandora's haven't been as good the last few times we were there, we go there at least once a trip.

What is the deal with them? Don't they heat up hotter than a meteor with minimal fuel? I can't wait to get one. Can you smoke on them too? I know you want a low heat for smoking but thought the egg was beloved due to it's uncanny heating ability.
