Here I thought JOE was a kid at South Walton that plays football.

On a serious note I understand that valuing land 15 miles from the Gulf of Mexico as some sort of future resort is ridiculous.  Just look at the land value in Walton County as you head north.  That's not meant as a slight at Freeport or Defuniak, but land values speak for themselves.

On the other hand those that dis JOE seem to conveniently drop assets that JOE retains.  Just in South Walton they own a one of a kind boutique hotel and quite a bit of commercial space.

Most of the naysayers seem to be looking at this stock as some sort of legacy stock as though any day someone will be famous as a reality star and we'll have to suffer through the antics of a JOE trust fund baby.  According to my broker Intel is a buy, but who's to say that silicon based chips aren't going to become the next eight track?

I guess the point is that much like housing stocks may or may not be right for each individual, but if it serves it's purpose during ownership then it's a good fit.

Cloud computing currently is exactly what it's name implies.  Large structures mostly made up of gas and moisture.  Don't discount computers just yet.  The first cloud hosting company to have a large crash, and it will happen, and you'll see a surge in stand alone computer purchases.

In other words:

Cloud = don't believe the hype.

I own JOE and INTEL as part of my large cap US allocation.
 
The best way to own either is thru a index fund or a passively managed fund from DFA.
 
JOE has woefully underperformed  SPY for decades.

No,no,no-the best way to own stocks is broad market index funds or passively managed funds from DFA.
 
Owning individual stocks is a fool's errand.
 
While Joe is up the last couple of months, it has historically and consistently underperformed the S&P.
 
 So I do own JOE...as part of our allocation to the broad US market.

I was unfamiliar with the term cloud computing, but after reading about it, it sounds like it's just an abstaction for extreme networking and [B]MULTI[/B]-processing.  Have you been smoking cloud matter? Please enlighten me.

Comparing it to the electrical grid is a little over simplified.  The infrastructure just isn't there yet for it to really be any kind of competition to a standard computer.  Cloud computing is a very advanced version of the mainframe terminal concept.  To get an idea of how under performing it can be sign up for [url]www.gotomypc.com[/url] for free and give it a whirl.  Basically the same concept.

As far as MULTI-processing, when's the last time you were rendering graphics on par with Hollywood blockbusters?  The average user just doesn't need the processing speed that cloud computing [I]could[/I] offer.

I know what you are saying - it's not a lot of money/a big portion, more of a habit from when we were little - an actual stock you can see signs for and physically visit is far more interesting than some fund.

Picking stocks is risky, for the broker, or so goes the thinking currently.  Oh yeah, forgot that they don't even call themselves "brokers" anymore.

Brokers (now called Advisors or any other number of names except Stock Broker) don't like to pick stocks (i.e. earn their fee) anymore.   The formula changed a while ago, to the following:  
1. join clubs, golf, churches etc. 
 2. Always talk generally, never specifically about equities.  Talk about markets, mutual funds, ETFS, "tools at the firms disposal", "allocations", 'managing risks", and "a personal plan based on YOU"
3.  Get the clients assets in the door, put them in a basket of diverse assets that you don't personally manage, and nearly automatically adjusted based on age and stated "risk tolerance" or "appetite for growth and risk".  
4. Put on Auto Pilot.   Rinse Repeat, onto the next client to "onboard"
5. Send automated account statements out quarterly, or monthly and sit down for coffee with clients quaterly or annually depending on account size to "answer any quetsions"
6.  If the portfolio or parts of the portfolio are obviously not working, then urge client to "stay the course", and if that doesn't work, then "let's get you out of some of these underperforming funds because these portfolio managers are not doing their jobs"  

What's the upside in providing real advice, if no one else is.  

I think that model is broken.   I think we need brokers to once again (be brokers) pick stocks, and not be ashamed to make calls.  Those are the guys I want to pay fees to.   Not somebody who has me allocated on auto pilot and has outsourced the same function to some portfolio manager in some other city, who manages the mutual fund.
