Beach Music Recommendations

It's cliche' I know..but "Margaritaville" is my ultimate beach song.

It was one of the few CD's the kids actually let me listen to on our trip (on occasional intervals in between the videos they were watching.)

If you decide to get one -- after I show you mine -- you'll want to get better earplugs. The ones that come with the iPod aren't very good at all and don't drown out the outside noise.

Paula, what kind of earphones did you get to replace the iPod ones? My brother, who's a technofreak, spent around $150 for some Shure phones, but that was too rich for my blood. I researched like crazy and found out the Sony MDR EX71's were great phones for the money, so that's what I got. Mr. Pod recently tried them out with his iPod and said, "Whoa!"

Hum, I have been just using the IPOD earphones, and they sound fine to me. Maybe I don't know what I am missing. Do they let you try them in the stores?

I have the car adapter which is good for traveling, but gives me problems in my area because I can't find a station that doesn't have some kind of transmission. I find the docking port with speakers is great, and I get a lot of use out of that. I also have that little transmitter that goes through the speakers.

Mango--in the original beach music thread, lots of people mentioned Bob.

I couldn't see the photo, but they're probably similar since they're in the similar price range. I've read that it's good to get better earphones, especially for kids, because then they don't turn the volume up so high on the iPods which can damage their ears. We'll be getting better earphones for our kids soon. They don't listen to their iPods all the time at all and I think they're listening to my warnings about volume, so I'm not too worried yet. But there is concern that people who blast the volume are likely to have hearing loss later in their lives.

Earbuds...

The original iPod earbuds don't seal in your ear and block out the sound, so you have to really turn them up on an airplane. Even so, I couldn't really listen to anything with quiet passages - jazz, classical, anything spoken. I found I was getting off the plane with my ears ringing. Not good.

I bought Shure E3C earbuds for a dramatic improvement in both sound quality and isolation. You can probably reduce the volume 30-40% with them. They are a little pricey at $160-$180, but you only get issued one set of ears per lifetime. The Shure E2C sounds nearly as good at $80-$100. Both come with a wide selection of interchangeable earpieces so you can find something that works for your ears.

Agreed on Jimmy Buffet, Jack Johnson, and Jamie Cullum. (I'm actually somewhat surprised and very pleased to find another Jamie fan!) His cover of the Neptunes' "Frontin'" is great.

Miss Tootsie: I my iPod. I've downloaded many songs (including some of the old Italian Pop songs I used to listen to when I was a wild and crazy 20-something, copied my CDs onto it, made playlists, downloaded my learn-Italian CDs to listen to when I walk to work, downloaded National Public Radio for free to listen to when I walk to work, downloaded the TV show "Office" to watch on the airplane (I got the iPod with the little TV screen -- it's actually watch-able). So, I listen when I walk to work. I also bought a tiny travel speaker that I can throw in my carry-on case and use when I arrive to where I'm going. I bring it to the cottage. I'll show it to you in August when we're there. I also have a nicer speaker at home for it.

The people at Best Buy where I bought it said iPod isn't really the best mp3 player, but that people buy it because of the brand. I don't know what else they'd recommend. But I do think that it's easy to use because so much equipment is compatible with it. If you decide to get one -- after I show you mine -- you'll want to get better earplugs. I was told to get the white one -- that's what I did -- because it doesn't show scratches as much as the black one does.

I also got a little cassette thingy to put in the cassette player of the car so I can use the iPod from the car stereo as well but I haven't tried that out yet.

I'm not typically someone who gets excited about tech toys but my iPod has made me very happy. Imagine having all the music from your house on that little thing... pretty amazing.

I look forward to getting the scoop/demo when you are in town. sounds like a potential item for my Santa list!

I just read an article describing how 'fragile' iPods are, and how that has created many new companies that specialize in repairing them. I have no idea how true this is, but the article was very interesting.

I'm not sure where I would find the time to load my CD collection to an iPod or MP3 player - I hear there are companies that will do that for you also - for a price :roll:

I've heard mixed things about iPods. I have a multiyear warranty from Best Buy. They don't seem to be too fond of iPods. They think they're over-rated. But, it has been fine for me and if it breaks they'll replace it on the spot. I've bought service plans at Best buy before and they've come through on them when needed. I have a Kodak EasyShare camera. I bought the original about 3-4 years ago along with a 4 year service plan and this is my third one from this service plan and I have the very nice newest model. So, it doesn't say much about the quality of products (e.g., Kodak easyshare and perhaps iPod -- too soon to tell) but it does tell us that the service plans from Best Buy seem to work. I've learned to save all the packaging though or I think they charge a stock fee.

I spent two weekends putting all our CDs on the iPod, one after the other. I just set my mind to it and did it. The nice thing is that it's all backed up on your computer, too -- or if the computer crashes it's on the iPod.

Wow Paula - you've really racked up (read traded up) on the Kodak cameras! I've always liked Best Buy (that's where I bought my XM Satellite radio) and reading about your experience tells me that they stand behind their Extended Service Plans - this is good to know for future reference. Glad your iPod is working well for you - I doubt I will ever try one, but would encourage anyone to give serious consideration to a satellite radio if they are thinking about an iPod; MP3 or the like.
