BP has significantly cut the flow of oil leaking from its damaged Deepwater Horizon rig on the Gulf of Mexico sea floor, a company spokesman said this morning.
Jeff Childs, a deputy incident commander for BP, said in a briefing with Alabama officials that the company successfully shut a set of hydraulic shears known as annular rams, helping to clamp the ruptured pipe and block the leaking oil.
"We've significantly cut the flow through the pipe," Childs said at the Mobile briefing hosted by U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa.
Childs said the company was still trying to activate a set of shear rams that are designed to seal the well by shearing off the drill pipe. The job is complicated, he said, because it is occurring at depths of more than 5,000 feet.
Shelby said the development was good news for the Gulf Coast.
"If we can stop that oil from pumping, or even slow it down, that's a big step," Shelby said.
Childs' statement came after BP chief executive Tony Hayward said earlier this morning that chemical dispersants being injected into the oil flow near the spill source have worked to some degree to keep oil from flowing to the surface, though he did not elaborate.

any news is good news at this point. thanks!

Can anyone believe anything BP says at this point? They sent lawyers as first responders and their work forms for cleanup crews have a waiver signing away your right to sue them. If it truely takes 3 months to shut this "spill?" off then I fear much of the eastern seaboard as well as the gulf coast will be uninhabitable. The smell of oil and dead sealife and loss of economic revenue will doom dozens of communities.

What a shame!
Spokesman David Nicholas said the rate was unchanged in response to an inquiry about another BP official, Jeff Childs, saying in an interview with an Alabama television station that the flow rate had been "significantly" cut.
"Our observations indicate no change at all, the flowrate is unchanged," Nicholas said.

Meanwhile, BP will continue trying to close the well with the BOP that is already in place on the sea floor.
BP has been able to trigger all of the six rams that should shear the drill string and casing and close the well, but they did not stem the flow, contrary to reports earlier today.
It has been one of the main focuses of BP's efforts since the initial blowout and will remain so, no matter how unlikely it is to work, Fryar said, because it offers the quickest way to stem the flow.
Charlie Holt, who heads BP drilling and completions operations in the US Gulf, said BP has repaired some leaks in the hydraulic systems of the BOP.
Holt said some of the rubber portions of the BOP may have been eroded by sand in the flowback and may not be able to shut the well anymore.
If the second BOP can be added to the well, it may be possible to circulate fluid through that to kill the well, Fryar said

Also, the first cofferdamn, which will apparently sit on top of the worst leak, was being loaded on a boat today.

BP oil spill slowing, Florida lawmakers claim | pnj.com | Pensacola News Journal
Key Congressional representatives from Florida and Alabama said today that BP is making progress in cutting the flow of oil from its damaged Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico.
"We have some good news: The leak is being restrained," said U.S. Senator George Lemieux, R. Fla. "BP thinks they are reducing the flow, so we very hopeful about that. But I can't say enough about what a huge threat this is to our way of life in Florida."But late Monday BP issued a news release contradicting Lemieux's assertion.
"BP would like to clarify that, contrary to some media reports, the actions it has taken to date on the blow out preventer have not resulted in any observed reduction in the rate of flow of oil from the MC252 well," the news release said.
Lemieux joined Alabama senators Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions and U.S. Representative Jeff Miller at a 2 p.m. press conference at Mobile Regional Airport.
The four officials had just returned from an aerial survey of the massive oil slick, now off the coast of Louisiana and Mississippi.
"Everything that can be done is being done," Miller said. "And we are asking BP to put money in an escrow fund so local governments, if possible, can draw upon it." Miller said the escrow fund was needed because many local governments are having to dip into their reserve funds to spend money for the disaster.

Soooooo....... it appears that some Republican lawmakers who are supportive of drilling in the Gulf are behind times and didn't get the "memo" that their "trustworthy" allies BP were not correct in their statement today about the slowing of the river of oil?
I'm shocked that they believed BP.....shocked...but hey...off shore drilling is safe....

Maybe Charlie can suggest to BP that they offer an $.85 per gallon at the pump price for gasoline in all gulf coast counties for the next 5 or 6 years.

Cheap gas is what got us into this mess.
SoWal Insider
I thought it was cheap BOP's...
SoWal Expert
Nope, cheap gas has been keeping our MPG and our demand for alternative energy sources low for decades.
Most of the alternative energy projects we have right now were started a couple years ago when gas prices & demand spiked and they could justify the higher costs.
As recently as the drilling symposium in Sowal earlier this year, the oil company rep poo-pooed solar power projects as elitist and impractical because of the initially higher cost per kilowatt hour.
Bet it isn't looking so $$ now!

Cheap gas did not get us into this mess. "Affordable" senators did and will continue to keep us there.

Hard to believe that the spill isn't slowing when looking at this map- http://response.restoration.noaa.gov/book_shelf/1901_TM-2010-05-04.pdf
4 days ago they said it tripled in size in 24 hours. It's obviously not continuing on that pace from what we can see above the water.

How in the world could it keep tripling in size?

Seriously? It wouldn't continue at the same pace, but 4 days later it should be significantly larger.

How in the world could it keep tripling in size?
Exponential growth caused by increased leaks, lack of containment, water/weather conditions, and spreading contamination from vessels.

Note that each day the slick moves, so on these maps, you have to note the color of a particular day, and then look for that specific color on the map. The rest of the colored areas represent the position of the oil on previous days.

This is the estimated location of the slick this Friday:

So far, we are in the clear. In fact, the entire coast is currently in clear. But this stuff will be floating around for a while, so who knows. The good news is it seems to be breaking up pretty readily, the last satellite view looked promising.

The spokespeople are not telling the truth. That's their job. They are underestimating the size of the spill while they are over-stating their cleanup efforts and down-playing the environmental and economic impacts.

That's why we aren't depending on BP for info - we're getting it from our local fisherman, clean-up organizations, and firsthand Sowal reporting.
