Can we can do better?

Stuff like this makes me ashamed of myself, my goverenment, my country. And I'm sure there are tons of doctors who want to help people and do good but how can we really expect them to sleep well at night in such a system?

Other than that, have a happy holiday!
There’s a lot of waste in our health care system, but providing basic coverage and basic services to people who don’t have it adds a lot of value:
A 24-year-old Cincinnati father died from a tooth infection this week because he couldn’t afford his medication, offering a sobering reminder of the importance of oral health and the number of people without access to dental or health care.
According to NBC affiliate WLWT, Kyle Willis’ wisdom tooth started hurting two weeks ago. When dentists told him it needed to be pulled, he decided to forgo the procedure, because he was unemployed and had no health insurance.
When his face started swelling and his head began to ache, Willis went to the emergency room, where he received prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medications. Willis couldn’t afford both, so he chose the pain medications.
The tooth infection spread, causing his brain to swell. He died Tuesday.

Now, clearly, this man made some sub-optimal choices here he’s not purely a victim of lack of health insurance. At the same time you have right before you a no-longer-living, no-longer-breathing example of the “push the patient to the edge of financial desperation” theory of health care cost controls. It turns out that the quality of a frightened, pain-wracked young man asked to make technical medical decisions under severe financial constraints is not very high. The social cost of 24 year-old fathers dying of eminently treatable tooth infections, by contrast, is gigantic.

In this political climate if you support helping this guy despite his lack of resources you're likely to be called a socialist rather than just expressing concern for your fellow man. What would Heyzeus Do?

I don't know about Heyzeus, but my dentist would explain all the potential risks so you wouldn't make such important decisions not knowing the full consequences and then would cut his fees to the bone and work out a payment plan for you.

Must say this sounds like a rather extreme case that was mishandled at several levels - probably due to budget limitations and overworked and underpaid staff.

The ER doctors and nurses aren't the ones profiting.

The administrations, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical are.

Very sad for this person. Antibiotics are free at Publix.

Many doctors also help their patients by giving them free samples they get from drug reps.

I'm sorry and I mean no disrespect but what should "my government" and "my country" do when people make self-destructive choices. Walmart (evil as they are and I do fear for my life in the parking lot there) has most antibiotics that would be effective for this condition for $4. The dentist's fee could be paid over time (or another dentist found to do so). These things just are not "my country"'s or "my government"'s responsibility. I think an exception is made for tuberculosis. In that condition, if a person chooses to be irresponsible and self-destructive, government imposes a "directly observed therapy" program to assure compliance due to the PUBLIC health threat such an individual poses. If we carry the "nanny state" philosophy out to extend to intervene whenever someone makes dangerous choices, we would never have the resources to achieve the "safety net" it sounds like some want provided.
