CBS Superbowl anti-abortion commercial

Almost every year, the Super Bowl is the most-watched television program and it's not just football fans who are responsible for the massive viewership. The annual game has become a social event replete with parties and non-football fans who tune in to see highly publicized halftime shows, inventive commercials and episodes of promising new TV shows afterward.
This year is no different except that when viewers tune in next Sunday, they probably will see a 30-second anti-abortion commercial funded by the far-right, religious Focus on the Family organization but they won't see a light-hearted ad for a gay dating Web site that features two men and another that's gay-themed. That's because CBS executives said the network doesn't accept advocacy ads.

The Super Bowl ad will apparently feature the quarterback (TEBOW) and his mother, who was advised to abort the pregnancy that resulted in his birth. But she refused, and, lo, unto her a quarterback was born. It will no doubt be a very heartwarming spot. I guess the point is that if Tebow’s mother had followed the doctors’ advice, the world would have been deprived of a desperately needed football player and there would not have been a Heisman Trophy winner in 2007.
Here's the ad CBS won't run:

A website called ManCrunch.com, which is a dating site for gay men, wants to buy a spot for its new ad during Super Bowl XLIV on CBS. (See the video of the ad below.)
UPDATE: CBS rejects Mancrunch.com ad, CNBC reported
Man Crunch spokesman Dominic Friesen told theNew York Post that CBS claimed all the commercial spots during the Super Bowl were sold. Friesen maintained that wasn't true:
"It's clearly a form of discrimination that we're getting the runaround, that we're not being told the truth. Quite frankly, there is a lot of ad space available -- a lot of the companies that typically advertise during the Super Bowl are not advertising this year."

CBS has given preliminary approval to an ad from Focus on the Family featuring Tebow and has said it will welcome advocacy ads if "responsibly produced."
It's not unusual for a network to turn down an ad for the Super Bowl based on content. The Post reported that CBS turned away a GoDaddy.com, which has skirted the line of edginess in Super Bowl commercials in past years.
Watch the ad and see if you think CBS should clear it for the Super Bowl. -- Sean Leahy

For those of you just wanting some funny commercials during the Superbowl have no fear!! 2.5 million dollars of your money is being used for a commercial to advertise the 10 question census. :bang:

Hmm if the teabaggers, conservatives, republicans, or whatever they're calling themselves these days hadn't rushed out to tell people not to take it perhaps they wouldn't have to have an ad campaign reminding people it doesn't hurt and in reality benefits themselves, their community, and their region.

Of course now that I'm actually cheering for a team in the Super Bowl I'm not sure when I'll get more food, drink, or go to the bathroom since we usually reserve that for when the commercials are off.

this thread is great funn! love every word of it.

except I do not believe for one second that Tim Tebow is a douchebag. anyone who knows anything about the young man would know that he is sincerely passionate about his faith and family. and cares a great deal about making a difference in the lives of others as he was taught by his family. forget the football achievements. his real life achievements are yet to come.

Historically Super Bowl ads haven't had an agenda for the most part. I think it should be kept that way. Imagine watching with friends who have different opinions on matters - gay rights, abortion, etc... it is crazy to start any controversy or THINKING during a fun game.

G

Gidget - you have said it perfectly!

I am allll for gay rights, but the ad wasn't one I would have come up with. Could have been MUCH more clever. And LESS is best. A flirtation would have been cute - not a sex scene on the couch lol. Hetero match making ads don't show heavy make out scenes. I would like to know if CBS would have vetoed an ad such as I am suggesting. That would be cruel if so.

G

if you ask me the Mancrunch commercial was hilarious! but not sure how Dad would have liked it - its not like you can pretend you didn't see it like you do the erectile dysfunction or other embarrassing commercials. maybe we'll be ready for it in a few more years."

Does anyone really care what Gloria Allred thinks? I mean really. Please, to those this "commercial" offends, rest easy, your little world will not be affected in any way. Your beliefs, lifestyle, or decisions about snacks and dinner will remain unchanged. This "commercial" is not for you. Everything on TV is not necessarily intended for YOU. But maybe, just maybe, someone will get a positive message from it and who knows....?

Desso - where are you from? I like you.

really, any commercial aired by any network is fine with me - I usually stay far away from commercial TV anyway... Tim and Mama do bring viewers a message of hope and that anything is possible. I do not see it as a threat to a woman's right to choose. does not the right to choose include the choice of giving birth to a child? this issue is never black and white. whichever side of the fence you are on, reducing abortion rates through education and awareness is always a very good thing to strive for. I haven't seen the commercial - I wonder why he chose to do something so controversial - maybe this is part of his mission to make a difference by telling his story - I doubt he is trying to take away the rights of anyone. but I could be wrong.

Let the games begin--I say keep the contoversial ads, but balance them -- have one for the Right (Anti Abortion)and one for the Left (Mancrunch Dating Service). Designate India-no-place as the RED State's Team and designate New Orleans as the Blue State's team. FTLOG, Mix is up and have some funn with it!

That statement should really apply to both commercials, but, unfortunately I fear it doesn't. The positive message for the mancrunch commercial could have applied to teenagers or young people wrestling with their sexual orientation that it is ok. I'd say you would be wrong in stating that decisions about snacks and dinner go unchanged, otherwise, we would not have commercial advertising and whether you realize it or not, you are being influenced.

Wow I almost wonder if they changed it because that was about as vague as you can get. Nothing wrong with it at all. Fake outrage strikes again!

Excuse me, but I think people were rightfully upset - it had the potential to be awful, and it is never fair to show one side of an issue without presenting the other- this ad was publicizing an issue, NOT a product or service ad. I imagine the pro-choice camp never thought in a million years they would have to run an ad during Superbowl, nor would they have wanted to in the first place.

I still don't think it really "fit" with the type of advertising normally seen during Superbowls, but hey, that's my opinion.

Okay, you made me do it Toots.

From my all time favorite movie, Slingblade:

Alpha Crab as Vaughan
Tebow as Karl.

AC: I'm just going to say it. I'm gay. Does that surprise you that I'm gay? You know what gay is, don't you?

Tebow: I don't reckon.

AC: [quietly] Homosexual. I like men sexually.

Tebow: Not funny 'ha-ha', funny queer.

AC: Well that's a very offensive way to put it. You shouldn't say that. You were taught that, weren't you?

Tebow: I've heard it said that a-way.
