Census in Walton County

This is a reminder to mail in your Census form if you received one. If you live south of the Bay you will not receive one in the mail due to the high number of rental houses in South Walton County. An enumerator from the Census Bureau should either have come to your house or be coming very soon to take the survey in person. If you received a notice on your door informing you of a missed attempt please call the number provided in a timely fashion so that you can complete yours. While it is preferable to do it in person you can do it by phone if after speaking to the enumerator you are unable find a mutually agreeable time. If you don't contact them or put it off you run the risk of having a neighbor or property manager being questioned as a proxy. In the event the enumerator is unable to contact you or a proxy your house will likely be identified as unoccupied. If you have received a missed contact notice please don't put it off; you have a limited time to be counted. For the next ten years these numbers are going to dictate our federal funding as well as how many represent us in the House of Representatives. If anyone believes they have a valid concern about not being counted please call the local census office in Pensacola at 850-288-7330. If you need to go further up the chain, the Pensacola office is overseen by the regional office in Atlanta. Those numbers are (404) 730-3832 or 1-800-424-6974. Walton county has grown tremendously in the past ten years and if we don't speak up we very well may be missed.

Here is a link to a map that shows the completion rate of each county in the country. Walton County is currently at 47%.

Census guy came to our house off Chat Holly yesterday. It'd didn't take five minutes to complete the form on our front porch. Totally painless.

Census Guy came by our house about a week and a half ago. Very nice older gentelman. He even came back to ask questions about the vacant house next us us a few days later. Did anyone read the story in the Beachcomber about the census taker? Supposedly a true story that happened in Pensacola. Here's a shortened/paraphrased version: Seems a mom was at work & got a call from her son. The son told his mom "there is a troll in our house". She told him she was busy & went back to work. The son called again - very concerned about the troll that was in the house. The mom begged off work & went home to check-out the situation. Upon arriving at the home she was met by the son who announced "the troll's in there (pointing to a bedroom door with a chair propped against the doorknob)". The perplexed mother removed the chair, opened the door and was met by a distressed census taker who was a person of small stature. Hence the son mistook the person for a "troll". ;-)

Why was a child so young they 1) let a complete stranger in the house 2) thought a troll was a real thing LEFT HOME ALONE? :idontno:

Sounds like someone may be double-dipping on the Homestead Exemption

Wrong, BR is not a double dipper.

Back to the Census: I had an perplexing experience.
I came home to find one of the "I was here; please call me" notices. I called, the young woman said she had left 8 notices at my house. I said, well, I only got one today. She insisted she had left 8.
She looked around for a few minutes trying to find something--finally, she said she would do the interview. I answered her questions, very easy, just took a few minutes. No problem.

Two days later I come home to find another notice, from a person who identified himself as the "Crew Leader". I said I was already interviewed by (and I gave her name). He said, really? He looked around for a few minutes and found the file; it said she had left 8 notices, but never received a phone call.

I said well, I wrote down her name; and I answered all her questions; and she verified how I spell my name.....

I asked him why they were doing personal interviews instead of mailing forms. He said because they had gotten such a dismal return from 32459 when they did the census 10 years ago!

I was left wondering on whose form she wrote the original interview information....

And the more I hear about the local census, the more I am glad she got herself counted!
