A bit of a headsup:
As we head into the holidays, this is a time when many of us think about giving to charity.
(For years I gave to Heifer, then when I saw how it was rated in the Charity Navigator, I decided to give my $ to other charities which looked far better in terms of efficiency as well as administrative expenses. This year Heifer, while still behind its peers, comes off a bit better than in the past.)
Anyway, I find this site quite useful because it gives a nice breakdown on how much money comes in, and where it goes.

Thanks, Cil. I too have become quiet skeptical about many of the charities. I have had many in my family die of cancer, but I quit giving to the American Cancer Society when I found out that only 9 cents out of every dollar goes to research, the rest goes to administrative fees . . . i.e. salaries.

Thanks Cil. This is a great site. Everyone needs to know about this.

Two that I know of locally that you won't find in the navigator, and don't need to are, The Seaside Rep, and the [SIZE=-1]Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance. Give locally.

With all respect, I think Doctors Without Borders or The Nature Conservancy is just as deserving of a SoWaller's charity as The Seaside Rep or Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance. I realize charity begins at home, but we are all citizens of Planet Earth, perhaps a little of both would be okay?

With much respect right back, DWB and TNC are both Great organizations as are many of the NGO's in the listings, I'm sure. I will repeat that I was pointing out two local organizations that aren't in the listings and are equally deserving of any discretionary funds. Oftentimes local organizations miss out to the big guys. Please feel free to send your money where you like.

WOW!!!:shock:My husband and I both get pressured to give to the United Way. He's expected to give his "Fair Share," which is a boatload of money at his income level. He has refused to succumb to the pressure, but who knows how that has affected him, if you know what I mean? For the past couple of weeks I have been barraged daily about giving, but where I work they only want 100% participation. So I'll write a check for $25.;-)

I, too, appreciate the info regarding United Way.

Thanks, Cil. I checked out a charity we've been giving to for dogs' years and I was relieved to see they do alright. I'm ashamed to say I never checked up on them before, so I feel like today was my lucky day! That website has some valuable pointers.
