Katie Blue said it all. There are plenty of puppies found at the shelters which will be ready for Christmas. I rescued one of mine from the shelter in Ft Walton. The people working there are very cool, and so are the dogs. Think of it as saving another life, instead of lining some breeder's pocket..

SJ...I am calling today for Molly's appt. for the little fix.  Please tell me you and all of sowal will hold my hand through it!  There's NO question whether to do it, I just can't stand puppies and pain!

Great choice.  Both of my girls were spayed and I have no regrets.  NO time for puppies no matter how cute.  The younger one, who is quite vivacious, was supposed to "take it easy".  The first afternoon home, she went racing down the back steps and I was terrified she had hurt herself.  Dogs know their limits, and she was fine.  My only suggestion is to ask for medicine for nausea afterward. Both my dogs get sick, and a dog with dry heaves(sp?) is NO fun and quite uncomfortable for them. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice!  I have been through this before, but it was like 13 years ago!

What a wonderful idea to get a rescued puppy!  My sister has four pugs, three of which are rescued.  They've all turned out to be the most well-adjusted, loving dogs you could ever wish for.  My nieces adore these pugs so much.  Looking into saving a puppy is definitely something to go for.   :wub:

I have 2 sweet fur babies that are rescues. Sweet, sweet babies. To me that is the way to go. Miss Kitty, will be thinking of you when you get that Mollie spayed. My little girl did great..had no problems at all and was up and about as soon as I brought her home. Good luck CCK, think rescue puppy!

Or even rescue an older dog.  My potty training days are over.  No more changing diapers or getting a kid or animal to the potty or outside.  No more gettng up at night.  Other than some "getting to know the routine" accidents and teaching him a consistent way to ask to go out, getting a new dog that is older has been really easy.

Someone mentioned "rescue" dogs, and just so you know, if you are looking for a particular breed of dog, there are people who rescue particular breeds all over the country. If you are looking for a Great Dane, do a search on "Great Dane Rescue" and you will find them. They will have puppies as well as adult dogs. You may have to drive a few hundred miles in some instances, but most breeds have a rescue mission.

Gosh, I hate looking at all of those dogs on petfinder, because now I want to go see and adopt another one or two, but I just can't. I don't know how anyone can go to a breeder to buy a pet after seeing those dogs. If you actually go to the shelter and hear those dogs talk to you and see how much they want to go home with you, you will fall in love and shed a tear or two.

SJ- you are so right!  It is hard to tell what kind of personality a pup will have.  With an older dog, you know pretty much right away if it's a "kid" dog, skittish, high-energy, big drooler, smelly (some dogs just smell!), lap dog, etc.
With MacGregor, yeah he looked at us, but went straight to the kids wagging his tail.  He hasn't left them alone since! :D

You wouldn't think of purebreds to be abandoned, would you, when the initial investment is so great, but they are, just as much as mutts.   :(

G.R.R.A.N.D (Golden rescue) is a very well organized and well run group.  We see a lot of there local rescues at the clinic where I work.  Before putting dogs up for adoption, they take the time to get to know the good AND bad things about the dogs, and try and match them up with a family accordingly.

I disagree. I can tell the dog's personality as a puppy. I don't know why people choose their dogs by just a photo. I posted some photos of dogs that I thought were cute, but when you get to the shelter, you may find that the dog with the personality which is right for you, is not the dog you would have picked based on looks. If you want a calm dog, take a few dogs out for a short walk. Even though all of the dogs will be excited to get out of their cage, you will see great differences in the dogs very quickly. 

Be warned, at the shelters, all of the dogs smell a little funky. They do clean up though. Jdarg does make a great point on adopting an adult dog. Many people are not prepared to spend much time training the dog, and getting up at 3am to let the dog out, and occasionally clean the big pile of poo which you will come home to. For those people, adopting adult dogs can be a blessing.

I want them all also SJ. I got my little Angel from the Humane Society, I walked by the cage she was in, and she gave me that look and little wimper, and that was it. She came home with me! I will never forget that look on her face.

I know someone who heads up a small office where it was very important for everyone to work well together. He will not hire anyone who does not own a dog. He says that dog people are great communicators.
