Be on the look out. Friends have reported seeing several coyotes in the Lakewood/Seagrove area and there was an article in the Sun this morning about sightings of Fl panthers in the Pt. Wasshington area. The coyotes have been seen hunting in the day time and walking up and the street in residential neighborhoods. I know we have taken their land away and have no other choice but to look for food elsewhere, just wanted to caution pet owners.

Those Coyotes will probably also help with that problem of the crying baby on the next door neighbors side porch.
That is so NOT funny.

That is so NOT funny.Yes, I know, but someone needed to bring it up as a potential problem - the coyotes and big cats, not the baby. Either could take down a 4 yr old. Be careful with your kids.

Mr. Blaineswood?????

Just keep an eye on your pets! We've had two cats disappear this year. A few months ago, I saw a coyote near our home and I'm certain that our cats were someone's dinner.
The Walton Funn, December 11, 2006
Obituary
Family and friends are mourning the passing of Jeff Blaineswood, of Blue Mountain Beach. Originally from Toledo, Ohio Mr. Blaineswood had lived in Walton County for 7 years and was an active member of his community and church.
Blaineswood was best know through his work with the Walton county environmental advocacy group, Tree Huggers .
Mr. Blainesworth was found dead in his backyard Sunday, the apparent victim of an animal attack. The bite and claw markings indicate an attack by a Florida Panther.
The funeral will be held Tuesday. It will not be open casket as the carcass had been picked over quite extensively by coyotes. ?When we arrived on scene, we found Mr. Blaineswood?s body in the backyard with a large woodpecker looking bird pecking away at his skull. It was kinda gory.?, said Walton EMS director Will Blatts. Autopsy results have shown that the holes in his cranium were created by a long chisel-like bill the size and shape of which points towards an Ivory Billed Woodpecker.
If this can be confirmed, authorities have indicated that they will be required to designate all of northwest Florida a protected woodpecker habitat and all residents will be required to relocate to the only site deemed unacceptable habitat for wildlife- the Superfund cleanup site in Pensacola.
?I think Jeff would be pleased, to have given his life for the depopulation and reforestation of Walton County. He often said that he?d rather die than see one more chain business come to 30-A.?, said his wife Delores.
People wishing to support the family are asked to purchase a Protect Florida Pathers License plate in lieu of any cash donations.
you are soooooooo bad.

So, are we adding coyotes, bobcats, and panthers to the list of "dangers of Sowal?" Lets see, yellow flies, mosquitoes, jellyfish, sharkes, Portugues Man of War, snakes (pygmy rattlers, water moccasins, cottonmouths), spiders (black widows, brown widows, brown recluse), scorpions, PANTHERS, COYOTES, BOBCATS and BEARS. Not to mention hurricanes . . .
Nothing like living in Paradise.
At least we don't have traffic, drive by shootings, gangs, air pollution, urban blight, and various other violent crimes and problems associated with urban/suburban life. I think I'll take my chances with Mother Nature because there is nothing like a beautiful, sunny 70 degree day in December. (But I will be careful with my kids). ;-)

Add world's largest spider to the list. By the time Bdarg saw it, I had turned it into the world's largest pancake spider. It was attempting to come into the house through a cat door when I saw it. It was bigger than any wolf spider I have ever seen- big, brown and hairy!

And hopefully your cats, too, CCK. Two of them are enough to lose to predators.

Skunky
And yellowjackets too! I watched a surveyor do quite an impressive dance after he stepped on a subterranean nest while tagging trees. We eliminated the nest so Rapunzey, Patrick pug and Ellie would be safe. :clap_1:

Lets not be too hard on the sweet coyotes! They only eat what we leave out for them
I think they're just missunderstood.
I've been chased by roosters, a bull, canadian geese, a humming bird, an angry possum, a snarling raccoon, an aligator, a bull moose, a wild pony, a mamma moose, a roughed grouse, a black bear, red-winged black birds, a flock of crows, bees, a mule deer and lots of dogs. Dogs are the only ones I'm really afraid of. The others had a reason to attack and only wanted to chase me away. The dogs were determined to get me, and some of them did. Some, luckily, were stopped by my trusty golden retriever who was mighty tuff! I've been chased down and chewed on by a german shepherd, but I've been licked by coyote.

Unfortunately, we couldn't control the situation with the cats because both were adopted strays. One was a true feral that had kittens in our house and was then semi-tame enough that we were able to get her fixed, vaccinated, etc., but she refused to sleep in the house. The other had been a stray, but she was an inside/outside cat. One "incident" happened last New Year's weekend and the other happened about 3 months ago. Needless to say we will now only have indoor pets until we have a fenced yard (but now I have to worry about panthers in the trees

Nope, not a letter carrier or a real estate agent.
As a kid I wanted to go live in the mountains like grizzly adams, and I have an uncle who's an amazing hunter. He taught me a lot about getting up close to the critters. The critters though, don't always appreciate the company.
As for the dogs ... I enjoy walking, running, biking, x-country skiing ... and dogs seem to like moving targets (or at least me). Try going for a nice bike ride out in the country, or through some small towns. There are unleashed dogs around every corner.

I hear ya about the rooster. I've had my own incidents. Those things are mean.
Yes, coyotes are just trying to adapt to their surroundings. They do very well in central Denver.

I always had inside/outside cats till we moved here. I am sorry about your lost kitties, it's nobody's fault--certainly not yours.
Our present cat was born here in the woods and tries to get out all the time.

Got pics?Or better yet, a snazzy video?
Well here it is, it isn't snazzy video, but a little rough, slightly edited video of our backyard buddies -- http://www.ubu-online.com/backyard.htm
And on another note ... coyotes and panthers aren't the ones to fear, its wild boar and hawks. I've seen stories in the news of a wild boar biting a woman and her dog, and a boy fighting off a red-tailed hawk that swooped down and grabbed his little puppy dachshund. What's next? Little foo foo being dragged away by an armadillo? My wife once had a squirrel climb up her and steal her ice cream cone. And I had a killer seagul fight me for my sandwich. I'm just waiting for the story about the gopher tortoise that attacks a hiker in Pt. Washington.

:clap_1: BFG, I would LOVE to have your backyard!!
I think I may have told the story of "Ginger" the squirrel who lived in my backyard when we first moved to this house. I first started feeding her by hand--pecans. One day when I was sitting in the front yard on my little stool pulling weeds, I felt this furry thing crawl up in my lap--yep, Ginger. From then on, she followed me around the yard like a dog. We continued this routine for a couple of years. Then my neighbor moved off and left her cats, and I adopted them--Ginger moved on. I miss her.

We were driving west on 30A last night, and a coyote crossed the road in front of us then trotted up the bike path. It was about 1/2 mile before the 4 way stop at Grayton. It seemed very unconcerned that car headlights were shining in it's eyes!

My neighbor just stopped by to tell me that they saw a HUGE coyote in the middle of the road in front of our house this morning. He trotted into the scrub next door.
Wonder where he is now?
