I know this is a serious matter in FL and it is extremely serious in GA.

Two dear friends have been pulled in the last two weeks by DUI Task Force Officers. You don't blow, ok - you automatically lose your license for at least 12 mos. You do blow - you have an admission and will most likely lose your license for at least four months, but can get a 'to work' permit.

Both of these people are going to spend about $25K on their respective defense and fines and this doesn't scratch the surface with increases in insurance and the job situation.

One stands a strong chance of losing his job and we'll know tomorrow. The other wanted to apply to pharmaceutical cos. and cannot with this DUI pending. TOAST!

I've spent several hours just being there for one and today helped the other get his company vehicle (yet another serious situation) out of the impound pokey. DUI Task Force Officer kept his wallet and he can't retrieve that until Tuesday, which meant I got cash for him to get the car out of jail. He got of jail late yesterday afternoon.

PLEASE! Take a cab! Or Xingo! PLEASE!

And a very important reminder is the limit is so low now, that even one drink can put some people over the limit. If you drink anything, do not drive.

I agree, Shelly! In GA, it's officer's discretion and the judges have zero tolerance. It is about time.

Just curious. Did they blow and if so do you know the numbers?

One refused to blow. She is on video and failed field sobriety. She will lose her license for at least 12 mos. Her attorney is $10K and he told her she will be found guilty, maybe even have to do time in the pokey. TOAST!

One blew and the ticket says 'over .08,' which is the legal limit in GA, but officer discretion overrides the actual number anyway. I think time of day has a factor, too.....4AM. He was in co. car, which has serious ramifications. I asked him why he didn't call me. He has no phone numbers memorized, they are all in his phone, which was immediately confiscated. Guess whose number is memorized? His boss. They were to get together yesterday anyway to discuss raise and bonus. TOAST!

Just curious. If someone got a DUI in a state in which s/he does not reside (let's say, Florida), would anyone know about it in his/her state of residence? The boss, for example?

Ever had a family killed by a drunk driver? Glass house? Poor judgment? Take a taxi, walk or stay at home to get schnockered.

I'm just glad my friends didn't have an accident or worse, kill someone like my Aunt was killed.

These laws aren't extreme. These laws are serious about the violation. Both of my friends admit to using poor judgment.

The laws should be at least as severe as they are, IMO. DUI kills people every day, and often not the driver that's UI.

Yes. When my brother was five and I was eight, we were playing in a friend's front yard. A drunk driver lost control of his car, hit my brother, and came inches from hitting me. I'll never forget seeing my brother dragged down the street on the car's bumper and seeing him literally look like roadkill. It totally devastated our family. Daddy spent all of his time at the cemetery for months -- he never got over it and ended up dying of a heart attack ten years later. Mom stayed in bed crying for a year -- she's still crazy, but I admire her for not committing suicide. It made me become an anxiety-filled person to this day.

BTW the driver hanged himself in the Atlanta jail that night. It made the national news.

I always worry about someone driving under the influence in Seaside and hitting one of the many children darting in front of cars. I don't think a child has ever been killed at Seaside, but I'm surprised that it hasn't happened.

Lynnie, good reminder during this party season.

Beach Runner, I am so sorry to hear this about your family. I know things like that you never get over, but just have to keep going. No one can understand how hard this is unless they go through it. I hope the holidays are a warm time for you and those you love.

I'm afraid there would be lots of arrest if the FHP or WCSD decided to run check points along 30A during certain times of the year.

Any idea why they don't. They seem to be so strict in other areas.

Possibly there are lots of variables. Was this person convicted, was it a first offense, was it a misdeamnor or felony charge, when did it happened, in certain states after a certain time period, with no further convictions you can have a first offense expunged.

So the answer is maybe.

There have been checkpoints on Hwy 98 in Miramar Beach and on Hwy 90 in DFS. Of course, you have to walk a tightrope on 30A. But, it wouldn't hurt to call and ask the decision-makers.

I do remember once, probably almost 20 years ago, when a group of the businesses on 30A approached the SO about speeders on 30A. So, they increased patrols - and one of the first tickets they wrote was to the president of the organization that asked for the enforcement.

All department of motor vehicles nationwide run checks with every other state before issuing licenses. They search by social security number. If your license is suspended or invalid in any one state, then you won't be able to renew in any other state. Normally these things stay on your driving record forever.

Tearful vm while I was out walking, enjoying this gorgeous morning! Friend #3 in the pokey for a DUI!

City of Atlanta has furloughed so many city police, the Governor has ordered State Troopers in the City on secondary streets. Everyone, please take cabs!

I was told by a LEO several years ago that they were advised to not patrol here heavily. That a contingent of the powers that be in Seaside had contacted the Sheriff requesting that they not be so visible because it "sent the wrong message" about the area. They want a relaxed atmosphere.

If there weren't anything to it, there would be more stops at our two local Tom Thumbs where at anytime of the day, you can stand there and watch people buy beer, pop it open, jump in their vehicle and drive away. There is an open container law in Florida.

I believe your entire driver's history is available to LEO's when your information is run. Your history may be expunged from public records though.
