Might want to check your oil.

My car has the most annoying habit of flashing a warning when the speedometer rolls over to the exact mile the shop says I'll need an oil change. Ugh. Doesn't it know that I always go over at least 500 miles? I mean hail, we've been together two and half years already.

Gas caps not tight enough produce the check engine light. Every car I own has a check engine light on. Drives me crazy. Often time a tiny tear in the rubber on the cap makes the cap not seal properly which will also produce the check engine light.

I thought it meant you were suppose to paint the engine in alternating black and white squares...

Yikes! How do it know? Is that a built-in feature from the auto computer or is your oil changer in charge of that? If so tell them to stop it. Sounds like a dealer trick.
If I couldn't turn it off that would be enough to make me get rid of the *^%$^$% car.

I know!!!! It's creepy!! They set it when I have the oil changed and yes, it's an absolute trick to get you back into the dealership. I don't pay for oil changes, but they try to sell me a "check-up" every time to the tune of a couple of hundred bucks. Then, they "always" find some little something that I need to pay for. I can't turn the "alert" off--they have to do it. It's just a light, but still annoying. I have been thinking I might need a new car soon. I mean, this one's gonna need tires before too long...

DD, on my car (it's a 95) i get the change oil light, but there is some kind of trick to get it to go off. I have to turn it on, tap the brakes a few times and then turn it off....or something like that. One of the service techs showed my husband. There's probably a code-breaker for your car too. weird.

Oh, I can turn it off...but it keeps coming back on. Yep...I'm sure there's a code. I'll ask them next time to not set it.

Never "underestimate" a check engine light, keep an eye on your gauges.
It could be a glitch, sensor, or time for tune up, one never knows.
If you smell something hot......get out of the car and start running. lol

We go to AutoZone and they put a little machine on the car that will give you a readout with a code #. Then either they will look it up in a book or let you look it up to see what might be causing "check engine" light to come on. They do this for free here. I suppose it leads to some sales of supplies for them or just good pr. Anyway, as BobbyJ says, the gas cap is often the culprit.
I'd call a few places around and see if someone will check the code for you for free! 🙂

Tighten your gas cap - that's a common cause. Another is a bad oxygen sensor - and if that goes too long it can be a $$$$ repair bill.
