Do the beaches in SoWal tend to have more frequent algae than Destin's beaches do?
I ask because the last several times I've been to Watercolor (we go about 5 times a year) there has been algae in the water. I'd become accustomed to this but went to visit family staying in Destin today and was floored by the beauty of their beaches. I was hoping the algae had cleared out of the region and when I returned it was the same as it always seems to be in Sowal.
Could this be because of the habitat of Sowal or have I just been unlucky?:idontno:

The reflection off of the giant concrete structures in Destin bleaches the water.

Algae, while sometimes messy and smelly, is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. Destin's beaches have it too.
As a rule of thumb, if the Gulf is warm enough for one to plung right in (instead of easing in a little at a time, waiting before the part you just put in to go numb before going in further), you are going to have algae. Surf conditions and winds have a lot to do with where it is and how thick it is.
btw, we didn't have any algae in May. That's why it is called June grass. 😀
