I am running out of the huge bag of dry food purchased for Molly at the recommendation of her breeder and if I change, now is the time to start. It is called Strongpoint and can only be purchased in 40 lb. bags from a company that delivers. The breeder told me beef based food was best. Our vets don't seem to disagree with this, but other than this one brand, I have found no substitutes.

Any suggestions? Molly is a 17 lb. sheltie. Thanks!

That kind sounds like a pain in the butt! Other than the Science Diet/Iams foods, I don't know much about the others- sorry. My vet likes the Science Diets, but our dogs are on Natural Choice Lamb and Rice- it was the only food our Golden's skin could tolerate for some reason, and we just stuck with it for these guys.

We have the same problem with our Golden. He eats Natural Choice Senior (lamb and rice). I was told several years ago when our Golden would loose his hair by June from scratching that dogs are allergic to yellow corn. Look at the label of most dog food and yellow corn is the main ingrediant :idontno:

I remember going through bag after bag of dog food and nothing working. It was such a relief to find it. Our golden, Maisie was allergic to everything- food and environmental allergies. MacG and Fiona don't seem to have any skin issues, but the food seems to give them everything they need. If it had some doggy downers in it , it would be perfect food!

Almost immediatly after switching to Natural Choice years ago. Our Golden kept his hair year round. We had him tested for allergies and here's the list:

Grass
Dust
Down (Keep in mind he is a hunting dog  )
The ingrediant in flea shampoos (starts with a "p")

Thanks y'all....I'm a little afraid to change foods. Our first sheltie had tummy issues. Of course, this huge bag did last me about 5 months. I had been adding some Spot's Stew (canned) to her meals when she had all that dental work, so it lasted extra long.

Oh man- all the ones that you can't avoid! I saw aN allergy report yesterday on a Bichon that is allergic to dust mites- same as my kids. Not a lot you can do about that one!

I would stay on it- you know it agrres with her! What kind of expiration date is on the bag? Could you order 2 bags at a time?

Marley eats ProPlan and I have had alot of compliments on how beatiful her coat is. This is the only food she has ever eaten since she started eating solid food. Now, if we can figure out how to keep her from shedding, I'd pay big money! I personally think it's because she is inside 98% of the time and the central heat and air wreak havoc....

Most breeders I spoke to prior to purchasing our pup were adamant about the BARF (Bones and Raw Food) diet. With some it's in the contract you sign when you purchase the pup. That's what my breeder friend who wrote this website (and had a dog at Westminster last year) uses http://www.ridgewoodpoodles.com/raw_natural_diet%20-%20prep.htm . She spends an hour a day preparing food for her dogs. No way I'm doing that! Thank goodness the breeder friend of hers from whom I bought my pup agrees with me. She recommended Blackwood dry plus a spoonful or so of high-quality canned food such as Canidae, and that's what Miss Pepper eats.

My girls like, no LOVE, Eukanuba but have a supplement of Missing Link. THe supplement seems to really help itching issues. If I try to change, Maggie will spit out the other food and eat only the Eukanuba.

This is what Stacy eats too. She has some allergy issues as well. We use dye free shampoos and she doesn't get treats anymore other than little pieces of cheese and eggs on occasion.

stick with what works SS! My Lulu likes Purina Beneful. But she would prefer a steak or hamburger.

My previous chocolate lab - Coco - also ate dry dog food (she would eat anything). But, I had her when I didn't have a child, she was truly my child. So, I supplemented her diet with homemade lamb and rice - I made a big batch once a week just for her, and she just loved it. If you have the time, try making a dish for the pup, it's very easy:

chunks of fresh lamb
brown rice
chopped veggies
olive oil
water or broth

sautee chopped veggies in olive oil, add brown rice and water or broth (cook until rice is al dente). meanwhile, sautee lamb. When rice is done, add lamb and mix. veggies may include onion, carrots, celery, broccoli, whatever!

I would like to do this all the time for Lulu because it would be a more normal diet for her - nothing processed. maybe I will try it again, you got me thinking... we all adore our dawgs!!! 😀

I wonder if your vet would tell you about any other clients whose dogs use that particular brand--maybe you could find someone to split the bag with you that way. Or it might be worth putting up a notice on the bulletin board at the vets, if they have one.

Our dog was on Eukanuba when we got her. At some point we combined Eukanuba with IAMS and now she has been on IAMS for some time. She does great on either.

My two eat a pouch of the Pedigree "Little Champs" in the morning. I keep dry Pedigree, small cruncy bites for them to munch on during the day. They have neve had any digestive issues...thank goodness.

Butter, our Havanese, was weaned onto Eukenuba lamb and rice, then refused it at about six months. We tried several alternatives, including boiled chicken breast supplemented with some bran for fiber. Bad decision to do the evolving food trip, resulting in loose you-know-what. Finally, we ended up with this prescription dog food that you buy from any vet's office. During all this hell we found out two things. First, all along the you-know-what was being caused by the health food store dog treats (new and improved) which are the Charlie Crackers, minus the salt but remade with whole wheat. Butter has a slight allergy to wheat. We took him off those treats and his you-know-what cleared up completely, plus he stopped having eye staining. You can tell if there's a wheat allergy behind eye staining if it has a reddish appearance. My husband figured this out by trial-and-error and reading, whereas the $175/hr. vet with multiple accreditations had no clue.

Second, we finally realized that Butter's little nose needs to be alerted for him to feel hungry. Cold dog food just didn't get it. So we heat his food in the microwave with a little bit of chicken broth and a drizzle of olive oil now and he really goes for it. The oil is also good for their skin.

Vet says that even though Butter is not overweight, he is probably old enough at one year to eat once a day and just have dry kibbles down as a snack. We tried to keep him on dry food exclusively, but he would go on these hunger strikes for several days and then have no energy. He would refuse his food, but go to the kitchen sink and do this bark and leap thing.

Next thing we know, these dogs will be demanding a trip to McDonald's, a 22-mile drive for us! :bang:

my big girl eats neutramax dog food. the breeder used it, and gave me a bag when i got her, and i never changed because she has a delicate stomach to begin with - hahahah. i really never changed because the breeder said she'd probably have some diarrhea while changing foods and i did not want to go thru that. she eats the one for and i quote "overweight underactive dogs". 😀 i alternate it with the senior formula since she will be 8 in may.

My 2 dogs and 3 cats eat Nutro. I have a 8 1/2 year old lab, a boxer that is pushing 11 a solid white cat that is 13 then a 3 and 1 year old cat. They all eat the Nutro and have great coats and health. Most people think my Boxer is a pup until they get close enough to see all the grey in her muzzle.
