I'm a big fan of both Vaseline Intensive Rescue and Eucerin Calming Creme.

Last winter was the first time I had ever had a problem, but because my heat source at the house is the wood-burning fireplace (I moved in last winter) all of a sudden my hands and all my skin, really, were dry and chapped to the point that they would crack and bleed. Ouch.

None of my usual lotions had worked and, in fact, some actually made it worse due to dyes and fragrances. I ditched everything and decided to start from scratch. The one that I found worked for me was the Vaseline Intensive Rescue. It's hypoallergenic, so it didn't irritate like my other stuff. And it was light/non-greasy so I could reapply as needed and it wouldn't drive me crazy. It really, REALLY saved my skin!

I recently ran out, and when I went to the store to replace it they didn't have any in stock. So I picked up the Eucerin as an alternative. It's also been great--nice and creamy, not greasy. It does come in a squeeze bottle, though, which I hate--I'd rather have the pump. I'm pretty sure I've gone through it much faster than the Vaseline, also. But it works wonderfully.

For my money, I'll probably stick with the Vaseline on a regular basis.
Hope that helps!

Crabtree and Evelyn Hand Therapy - doesn't leave them feeling sticky, either.

I was going to say this. It's the best lotion I have ever used and even my husband uses it, and we have tried everything because his hands are always in water. They crack and bleed. I have it this year, too. I just bought two more as stocking stuffers. They had a 50% off sale on Crab and Evelyn.com Not sure if it is still on sale. I would imagine so.

I find the best solution is to drink more water and slather on lotion before bed every night.

Anything with shea butter in it is great, but I find any moisturizer works.

For an extreme solution, before bed smear Vaseline or A&D on your hands and put old cotton socks over them to protect the sheets.

These are Hysterical... but they don't cover the critical cuticle area

ScBug, I like shea butter creams also.
Many people I know extol the virtues of Gold Bond and Bag Balm, tho I haven't personally tried those.

If I may say so myself, AVON has a great line for those 'winter hands', it's called Moisture Therapy. While we offer a lot of different types of lotions, the Moisture Therapy line is the best for hands that are already cracked. The Intense Cream is my favorite.

I HATE using lotion because I don't like the greasy feel, however, I can use the Intense and it doesn't leave that feeling but yet my skin is smoother, softer and feels a lot better. You can find my info on my screename

Aquaphor. It's seriously da bomb. Works even better for me than the prescription creams I've tried.

If you don't mind the smell, you can apply "Bag Balm," found in most pharmacies, before going to bed, and it will leave your hands feeling incredible when you wake up. Works on cracked feet, too. If you have bad cracked skin, your cracks will totally disappear after using for about a week. I think the earthy smell in bag balm is from lanolin.
