Well, there was a phenomena in New Orleans last May referred to as the Katrina baby boom....Skunky even got a new cousin.

Seriously, people...let's stop this. Remember how the guy from Colorado that accurately predicted 2005 predicted 5 major storms last year? Nobody really knows until the little boogers start swirling out of Africa. Why work ourselves into a lather? I for one need a valium everytime I read something like this...and I seriously don't want to move to North Dakota.

Edited

I had heard that due to the wind stream and currents, the majority will hit the east coast.

That was the 2006 forecast as shown in the first image on the link. Have you also seen that for the 2007 forecast?

Isn't Bastardi kind of a blowhard? (Pun not intended. ) I think he was the one last year sounding the alarm about a potential disaster storm striking the Northeast. I have to agree with Punzy; it is just too early to start talking about this.

TFT, according to the article in Goofer's link, Bastardi had the prediction which came closest to reality for the 2006 season, and North Carolina to Boston got hammered by one of the storms.

But that's Accuweather reporting on Accuweather's meteorologist, so I'm not sure how Accu-rate they are going to be. ;-)

It just seems like Bastardi is bored and needs attention. He sounds almost gleeful that disaster is imminent:

?Last year the Northeast may have dodged a bullet, but unfortunately  you can only be lucky for so long. We are in a pattern similar to that of the late 1930s through the 1940s, when the Northeast was hit by two major storms.?

?We are living in a time of climatic hardship,? said Bastardi. ?We?re in a cycle where weather extremes are more the norm and not the exception. One of the ways this manifests itself is in the intensity of hurricanes and tropical storms. Last year was just a breather, because the overall pattern shows no sign of reversing in the near term.?

Where's the blah blah blah smiley?

I'm kind of thinking along the same lines as TFT. This was Bastardi's forecast for last year.

Like many others here I prefer to go to Jeff Masters for my hurricane info. Here's his latest take on the upcoming season. In sum: SST's higher, but not as high as 2005; too early to tell about the tradewinds or steering currents. Check back in May.

Hey SJ, yes I had heard this for this year, also that the cycle was not as bad last year as it was supposed to be and would carry over into this year's season. I will try to find the article and forward it to you.

I read this article and just heard the same news story on the radio. The only difference is that the radio news story also stated that these forecasts made two months prior to Hurricane Season, are often inaccurate.

Rule 1. Never be in the same town as Jim Cantore during hurricane season.

:floor: You got that right. When you see the Weather Channel's van pull up, you know your decision to stay was wrong, wrong, wrong.

Seconding TFT on Jeff Masters!

He avoids sensationalism, offers informed speculation (which he identifies as such), and views weather as a public service, not a media event. Bless him!
I'll never forget he publicly advocated evacuating NO on the Wednesday before Katrina struck, well ahead of anyone else.

His blog just before today's reviews the April CSU Gray/Klotzbach forecast. While the rest of the media takes it as gospel, Jeff correctly points out that their April forecasts, while improving, are not very accurate. OTOH, their June forecasts are usually much more dependable.

I've recently read Divine Wind, by Kerry Emanual. Highly recommended. It will raise your understanding of hurricanes.
