I am procuring a mortgage for a client buying in a brand new condominium in the Big Apple, and the building is being built green. Apparrently GreenHomeNYC rates buildings on a green-o-meter. Tax credits are given if they meet the minimum green requirements.
One of the features is oak flooring fron "ecologically well-managed forests".
So I looked this up because I didn't know realize that forests were "managed" to the extent they are.
Found it interesting. I see burning the forests is in the plan like they did recently.
Wonder if Sowal forestry experts have some kind of individual plan?
Wouldn't it be interesting if you could get a tax credit in Sowal for green homes, and wondered what types of materials could be used in construction that constituted green, but were also hurricane resistant at the same time.

Mango,
There are a few programs with this general idea. The most well known in the architecture/construction world is the LEED program.

What is LEED??
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System? is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings? performance.
It is a great program and website, I encourage everyone to check it out. You can look for LEED certified building products next time you want to do some work on your house.

"well managed forests"
That strikes me as a tad oxymoronic.
(I truly get the point being made, but it did provide me with a chuckle.)

As a former tree farmer in South Walton, most of the timber here was managed, that is until St. Joe decided to get into the real estate business. Yes, tree farms are "managed", quite a lot of research goes into it. It's similar to any other crop farm, other than it takes a good 20 years to harvest. Important note is that there is an illegal lumber business going on, importing from rainforests, with similar activities as a drug trade. Make sure the sticker or mark on the lumber you buy is certified.

I saw a show on a totally green home a while back, wish i could remeber where. But they were making alot of products including floors from bamboo. Grows fast, and cheap and made a great looking floor.
