This is a very interesting piece of legislation. They pay the FACC dues with our tax dollars so they can (FACC - Florida Association of Cities & Counties) fight against pay cuts for constitutional officers. What a deal.
Salaries for commissioners in Walton would drop tp $27,900
Salaries for all other Walton County constitutional officers would drop to around $80,000
Do you think our elected officials will be in favor of this state budget cut.
See the FACC legislative alert emailed yesterday.

Do you know what percentage of their current salaries this would be? I think that there are counties in this state that have had budget problems for some time. Not ours.

I think that is around a 28% drop in salaries. Personally, I think County Commissioners should be paid more than their current pay. I don't know how they expect a Commissioner not to want to line his or her pockets when the pay is so little. Pay someone appropriately to run the County, and we might find that intelligent and caring people would run for those seats. (I'm not saying that the current Commissioners aren't intelligent and caring, but we've seen the shysters.) As it stands, I have no idea why anyone would want to be a County Commissioner, getting yelled at all the time, and blamed for previous Commissioners' actions, unless there was something in it for them, other than the $34,000 +/- salary which they are currently paid.

Thanks for the information SJ. That's too big a cut. I'm thinking a token "we feel your pain" cut would be appreciated even if it were only temporary.

Don't quote me on those numbers, but I think they are fairly close. Maybe someone with some budget info can correct me if I'm way off.

$80K for someone with the responsibility entrusted to a constitutional officer would be really, really sad. And embarrassing.

ShallowsNole and Smiling JOe make valid points. I wonder how many of the current office holders (and those seeking to replace them) would stay "in the fight" knowing they were facing a substantial pay cut?

IMO, $80,000 is not bad moeny, given the duties of those positions. If you are telling someone making $100,000+ that they are now having their salary yanked by 25% percent, they should be a little heated. However, someone else running, might see that $80,000 as a lot of money, especially for people living in areas like Defuniak where the cost of living is a bit less than SoWal. Cutting a County Commissioner's pay to $28K from around $34K, won't deter people from running in that race, as they are obviously not running because of the money as it is.
