Great report on the Florida HOA that outlawed the "Support Our Troops Sign" on the lawn.

Excellent, Shelly.
I love the Daily Show.
I spent 3rd through 7th grade in Levittown, New York. You really could go into anyone's house on our block, and know where everything would be.
But there weren't any covenants--hee, there didn't need to be.
heh
"But if you don't have tacky s*** on your lawn, how do you know you're in Florida?"

That was funny :funn:
I live in a development in New York , but we don't have any covenants or restrictions. We all get along like family, so we had funn one year giving each other violations at Xmas, ie; plastic Santa or some kind of tacky lawn ornament (which we deliberately purchased) We re-arrange the lighted deer in strange positions  and then issued violations. ;-)
There are pros and cons to C and R's, but I am gald I don't have any where I live and where we bought land in SoWal. 😱

That was a funny sendup SHELLY. I had not seen it. However, because it is Comedy Central, they looked more at the absurdities of the story than examined the facts. Which is fine -- that is what they do! 😀
However, there has been a lot of rehashing of this story in the local papers and I have to say I side with the HOA on this one, and most reasonable people who have read about it do. The HOA president tried to work with the woman to come up with a solution that fits within the rules, and she was obstinant and seemed to prefer to alert the media and make a fuss -- which of course played well on the talk shows. A big concern within the community was NOT that they didn't support the troops or support the family, but that if the sign was allowed, anti-war signage was bound to begin popping up and you couldn't allow one without the other, so soon there would be signs everywhere. Westchase is a large community (never noticed it looked like a penis :floor: ) and while it is somewhat homogenized there are bound to be alternative views.
The family clearly cannot afford the fines that are dictated in the HOA rules that they claim not to care about. But keep in mind they purchased a home in an HOA and by doing so agreed to follow the rules. The woman's mother I believe co-signed on the loan, and I think the woman was saying she never read the rules before she purchased -- they just wanted a house and they wanted to get one no matter what. Which I would imagine would inspire some finger-wagging from SHELLY about failing to do research. :nono1:
For our primary residence we have always bought into older, well-located neighborhoods where an HOA is not necessary because everybody keeps their property looking good. But not everyone can do this. Never lived in an HOA community and don't really want to, but they do have their place. The woman in the story is young and apparently thought by playing the Iraq card she could do what she wanted. I haven't heard any updates lately so I don't know what has become of the sign. I think she should just put it on her front door! :idontno:

Thanks for sharing the facts of the case, TooFar.
I agree: ya gotta do your research before making the purchase.
