Hey ibd did you just get back from NO? We are planning a trip and not sure where to stay, what is available? Would love to hear a complete report!!:clap_1:

Most of the hotels in the French Quarter are back up and running. If you want mega-hotel, the Marriot and Sheraton on Canal Street are back. Almost all the restaurants you might have heard of/been to before are open and doing fine;notable exceptions-Mr B's, Commander's Palace and Camelia Grill, all of which will reopen eventually. :D

Skunky, can you tell me if Messina's is still located at Iberville and Chartess? My ex-sister in laws family owns it and I just have wondered about it over the years.

We were only in the quarter/warehouse district for about 3 hours.:( I had to take Little IBD to see her grandparents up in French Settlement. Mr. IBD went to West Bank to look at property. I PROMISE that we will have a cocktail in NO soon. I am going back in Nov. for the National Assoc, of Realtors convention so maybe we can hook up then.....??????

OK IBD, why didn't you send me a message that your clan was going to be in town?:nono1:

By the way, Mrs Skunk enquired regarding kickoff for the Saints/Panthers game. I am assuming SOWAL will be cursed with having to endure the Bucs or Falcons on the network broadcast. Maybe a Saints get-together at Shades at the Loop is brewing? :idontno: :clap_1: :idontno: They are 1-0 versus Carolina when I watch them from Shades.

The game will be on at our house for sure. NFL ticket. You and Mrs. Skunk are welcomed with open arms to come and watch at our house. I just dont see paying $$ for food and drinks when I can do it at home for free. We have a tv on the back screened porch and one inside as well. PM me if you are interested...

Here ya go....
MIRLITON

Chayote (Sechium edule), also known as: custard marrow, christophene (France, Caribbean), chouchoute (Madagascar, Polynesia), brione (France, West Indies), vegetable pear, cho-cho, soussous, chuchu, choko, pipinella, xuxu, mirliton (southern U.S.), mango squash, and huisquil. For all these exotic names, this is simply a subtropical member of the squash family, eaten as a vegetable.
It is a pear shaped fruit, has a single seed and a taste similar to zucchini. The young root tubers are also eaten. Chayote is native to Mexico and Central America and was a popular vegetable with the Mayas and Aztecs. It's cultivation has spread all over the world, including Algeria, Madagascar, Polynesia, southern U.S., China, Indonesia, New Zealand and Australia.

I have never heard of this vegetable either. Is this dish served alot in Louisiana?

I have only lived and stayed in South Louisiana so I only know about that area. I did learn this:
Mirliton-is a French word which has nothing to do with cooking. The Cajuns use the word to refer to a green vegetable like chayote or a vegetable pear.

The things you learn on Sowal, and to think the kids and my boss think I just do this to kill time.

It's green whatever it is, another vegetable my son won't eat.

I would love to try some stuffed militons. My ex-sis-in law (Allifunn's ex sis-in-law too), a genuINE cajun from NO, was making these the last time she was here a few years ago, and got so sh_tfaced that she burned 'em up before she could stuff 'em and we just dumped them. this happens a lot when NO people come to my house. but when the dish is actually completed, you ain't never had no better.
