Started on October 7th, Free Rice is a word game where you match a word with it's description. For every right match you donate (via sponsors) 10 grains of rice to the UN World food program.

I'm not buying that either, SWGB, particularly since they tend to blow up in your stomach.

I'll bet someone here knows. But, the next time I cook up some rice, I am going to count! I'm certain we're all contributing to the UN's cause much more than we realize! That's a good thang!

I would have helped you out by counting but then I thought, which rice? Basmati or Aborio? One grain of Aborio is half as long as a Basmati or a Jasmine (sorry, we have Trader Joes by us so I don't have to buy generic rice any more ). There's no way I could help you count to see how much we're feeding people with our noggins.

So I looked at the FAQ on the website instead. Duh! It's easy to figure out how we're helping:

The composition of UN World Food Program food basket varies from country to country and region to region, depending upon the eating habits of the people WFP feeds.

In countries where rice is a staple part of the diet, World Food Programme provides, on average about 400 grams of rice per person, per day (for families, including children and adults). That is intended for two meals that include other ingredients to ensure a minimum of 2,100 kilocalories per day.

There are about 48 grains of rice in a gram.

OK, this is addictive, I will never get anything done now. :funn:
Donated 3500 more and changed to paintings and geography. I did pretty good on geography until they moved to what used to be Russia and I do not know those.

Got a few paintings but at least with those you get lots of rice for a correct answer.

I will not go near the math area. I wil leave that for BR to do.

At least with the words my years of Latin were good for something.

I am trying to average 2,000 grains a day - figure it is good brain exercise!

Haven't tried the math yet, have been working on my geography and Italian.

A few minutes of paintings- 1000 grains of rice. Of course it's not too hard when the concentration is on Van Gogh, Vermeer, da Vinci, and Manet. Big on repeats of artists.

It took me a while to correctly match the paintings/artists - which is sad since I've seen most of them in person. I know the painting, but don't necessarily remember the artist.
