I so want to say TAKE THIS GAS AND SHOVE IT
but they know we don't have time to walk or ride our bikes everywhere
so we're stuck with the 14k gasoline

bp's billions is chump change

the money forked over to pay people from the spill was a loan that we will pay back with mega interest...
bp and whoever else is involved

people have to go to work to feed their families

A negative cratique of free markets and capitalism basically. I wonder if author really understands what he's criticizing?

You can't completely blame them when we continue to accept high prices and do nothing to change our behavior or dependence on oil.

Remember those 4.9 MILLION barrels of oil that leaked into the Gulf? That was a 7 hour supply for our oil-addicted country.

We fuss and fret, but few do anything to change the status quo. And there IS a great deal we CAN do, we just choose not to for a variety of reasons.

That $85 plus gas fill-up BR mentioned would last some people weeks or months because of the decisions they have made to use less oil/gas.

The problem is that all of our vehicles are paid for. To buy even a used fuel-efficient vehicle would cost us more than the increased gas prices. Plus, as I've said before, hubby is 6'8" and daughter is 6'3", so most fuel efficient vehicles don't fit them.

I agree with all this, I don't blame the oil companies though which buy the stuff on the open market. If we're looking for blame, blame ourselves, or blame the cartel OPEC which controls the price through monopoly control of production. (I admit too, I am one of those crazy people who own some oil stock - a bright spot in my portfolio thanks to the dividend and price increases.)

Unless I drive to the beach, am at about $100 or less/mo. But, I need to be heading out of Buckhead to tank up these days - $0.30/gal. cheaper just a few miles north. When I bought the Ho, it was about $38 to fill up. Take a wild guess what it costs now. And, I am with BR: not selling it (might crash it again), but am not feeling particularly incented to buy a hybrid, etc. I have adjusted my driving habits and reduced my time in the vehicle. I feel that difference in my pocketbook and fitness.

If supply and demand were the only factors determining cost that I would understand. And while many have not reduced their use, I personally have done a lot.

"The main reason for high gas prices are high crude oil prices. Oil prices normally rise when demand is greater than supply. However, in 2011, high oil prices were caused by investors' fears about unrest in Libya and Egypt. Even before that, oil prices were steadily rising, as commodities traders took bet against a declining dollar, and bought gold and futures contracts. These are agreements to buy or sell oil at a specific date in the future at a specific price. Commodities traders can create a self-fulfilling prophecy by bidding up oil futures prices. Once this starts, it can create an asset bubble."

Oil prices took a nosedive Thursday in a historic selloff, erasing weeks of gains and indicating that the months-long climb in energy prices may have hit a ceiling.

We will see if that shows up at the pump.

I bet you a $5 gallon of gas in 3 years that if it does it, it hits the same price again within 3 months.

Demand has been increasing globally, but supply from many major producers has not increased - some think because output from big fields is decreasing.

Speculators are to blame for the spikes, but usage/supply is still to blame for the overall continuing increase in price.

Lynnie, you have to see my husband (6'8"), daughter (6'3"), and son-in-law (6'3.5") trying to get into my BMW. They look like they are in a clown car. And I'm not short at 5'10".
