What a neat site! We were at our son's and daughter's-in-law this past weekend and our son showed us this site. They are going to be in Paris in January and he showed us the hotel where they'll be staying. We actually saw the house in the panhandle where we will be staying in Jan and Feb of 2006...and, while you can pay for a subscription, it's free for what we are interested in :clap_1:

It really is cool. I've found that the larger the city, the more degree of detail there is. I swear, you can spot a freeze-frame of someone picking their nose on Peachtree Road (EWWWWW!).
But what I find amusing is the guy on CNN who is their supposed expert using Google Earth. He was on CNN constantly after Katrina. The funny thing is that he goofs up a lot. I mean, any 12-year-old would be better at using Google Earth than he is. But the other reporters on CNN treat him like some sort of a technology guru because he knows how to use Google Earth.

And yes, the larger the city, the more detail you can see. We use it all the time, even look for restaurants in Chicago, etc. And you can see a tiny red dot in our driveway - it's my husband's red car! Ha!
Oh BR and JR that is so cool. I didn't realize that guy on CNN was using google earth, but I know what you mean...it was so frustrating watching him cruise by what he was trying talk about! We are going to enjoy this site so much...I didn't think about using it for restaurants. My son said people post too about things...maybe a great way to get a great restaurant!

Well, when we are looking for a restaurant, we click on the "dining" option at the bottom of the Google Earth site. Then, all the names of restaurants pop up on the map. That way, you can see what's nearby or w/in 3 or 4 blocks, etc., of where you're going to be. It also gives you the option of locating all the Borders Books in the area!

OMG! That "Google Earth guy" is on CNN right now talking about a hydroplane crash in Miami right near the cruise ship area. If you've ever cruised out of Miami, you know exactly where I'm talking about. I wonder how much they pay him to just do Google Earth.
This is he: http://www.cnn.com/CNN/anchors_reporters/foreman.tom.html . He graduated from Troy (formerly State) University - he's a Trojan!

For real... Troy State??? That was very near where I grew up.

I just looked at that CNN link about Tom Foreman. Who would've EVER believed that a Troy State graduate would make it to CNN. (To quote Seinfied, "Not that there's anything wrong with that....")

Google Earth is wonderful. I use it all the time in my work. After Hurricane Dennis, we used it to check for standing water around our house. We realized there had been some storm surge because the swimming pool liked like a container of chocolate pudding! There are some very impressive photos of New Orleans post-Katrina on that Web site, too.

We do a lot of Earth Googling here- it is fun!It must be, because my freshman college age son said so as well. I figure anything a kid says is cool, is cool.
