Rather than waiting on legislative approval for his most recent budget cut push, Florida Gov. Rick Scott has issued an executive order slashing the state budget for social workers and group homes for the disabled. #
The cuts would affect between 30,000 and 35,000 Floridians with severe developmental disabilities. They go into effect Friday and will remain in place at least through June 30, the end of Florida?s fiscal year. #
The news comes at the same time as a report that the Agency for Persons with Disabilities has received approval for a federal Medicaid waiver program that is designed to help stabilize the budget. Nevertheless, the agency is now expected to operate with 15 percent less funding. #
Bob Wright, a board member and former CEO of Winter Park?s Threshold Center for Autism, told the Sentinel that the most practical way to make do with less funding ? cutting staff accordingly ? would be an impossibility because it would put the Treshold Center in violation of state laws on staff-to-patient ratios. ?This may break our backs,? he said. #
Wright went on: #
If this were any other workplace, you would consider it a war zone. ? My staff gets bitten, hit, kicked, spat upon, defecated on, urinated on ? for $8.23 an hour. And every time we start talking about giving our guys a pay raise, the governor comes along and cuts the rates. #In an ironic display of temerity, governor?s office staff happily tweeted about an appearance Scott made at a fundraiser for the Special Olympics on the same day he authorized the order. #
this speaks for itself...this man has no shame!

Well they have some unused prison space, and seeing how it will be privately run, it will create jobs and fill 2 needs the state has. Yeah I said it. :sarc:

They were operating over budget for the fiscal year. Scott didn't "slash" anything. Kudos to Scott for keeping them within budgetary spending requirements.

He seems hell bent on doing what we hired him to do, drag us all kicking and screaming toward fiscal responsibility. No politician on the planet could make the calls he's making, they'd be too worried about the size of the protest crowd on the corner. The lack of people like Scott in government is the reason why this country is so screwed up fiscally. We should consider ourselves lucky. We made the right choice. The state may not like the taste of the medicine going down, but in four years we're going to look back and pat ourselves on the back.

I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately. Scott is not your ordinary politician - thank god for that. We did something no other state has done, we put a guy in charge who's capable of making the right decisions, despite how painful the results may be. He's doing something unheard of, he's bringing the free ride to an end. This country desperately needs more people like Scott in government.

What free ride, collective bargaining, telling me I can't have dues deducted from my check, attacking pensions by taxing the employee to work for the government, reducing the cost of education, reducing services to the physically and mentally challenged, protecting teachers from politics by taking tenure away, privatizing prisons so companies can make a profit, penalizing those who can't find a job by reducing their benefits, are those the free rides you are referring to? This is guy who could afford to fund his own campaign to get elected. The free ride coming is to the big business interest who will pay less in state taxes, damage the enviroment and be able to hire cheaply an ill equiped and educated workforce. This is the the guy who thinks splitting the Supreme Court in 2 is good for Florida, that regulation is not necessary unless it benefits his cause or is an attack on his percieved enemies. I think you live in a very sincere dream that you basically share with yourself--but hey, keep up the "fiscal responsiblity," "we need to take our medicine" chattle here on Sowal while many families in Forida continue to suffer. For right now, Scott is a "hell bent" agent of the super wealthy, in bed with both the blinded, Teapartied, Religious Right and the diabolical Corporate Right, which ever is more convenient/expedient for his political justifications. His type governing is actually the ultimate definition of Fascism, where the Corporation and the Government meld into one, and are indistinquishable.
When he says "Lets get to work" --is he talking to Florida's middle class, hard working citizens or to the Koch brothers?

Affordable Housing Trust Fund Raided too...
Affordable housing thought endangered by proposal | Saint Petersblog
does anyone else see the pattern -- Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Florida...teacher, firefighters, state workers, disabled, elderly, children, homeless--who do you suppose wrote the play book for this -- we know who's funding it. And, we know that all these governors are in lock-step...with the ultra right wing faction of the Republican Party.
the people have the recall votes in Ohio for one of the senators; I am optimistic that regular middle class people in Florida will pay attention to what is happening too -- and demand some recalls here.
Affordable housing thought endangered by proposal | Saint Petersblog
A coalition of affordable housing advocates is urging the Senate to drop a proposal that would permanently redirect real estate transaction tax revenue from the Sadowski Housing Trust Fund to General Revenue, reports the News Service of Florida. The section of the proposed bill (SB 7200) would cripple affordable housing efforts, the advocates say. ?Permanently redirecting doc stamp money that is dedicated to Florida?s housing trust funds is not needed for the Legislature to balance the budget this year,? said Jaimie Ross, facilitator for the Sadowski Coalition, which supports affordable housing spending. ?The Legislature can sweep the money in the state and local housing trust funds to balance the budget without permanently redirecting the money to general revenue.? That?s what has been done in the past. Lawmakers have dipped into the trust fund to shift money to general revenue. For some years, there?s been a cap on what the affordable housing trust fund can actually take in in documentary stamp tax revenue, with any amount above that going automatically into general revenue. Documentary stamp taxes are paid on documents that are typically part of real estate transactions. ?This proposal would mean the end of the Sadowski housing trust funds,? said Douglas Buck, Governmental Affairs Director for the Florida Homebuilders Association. ?The Sadowski Housing Trust Funds create77 jobs per every $1 million of trust fund dollars that is used to fund housing programs.? The Florida Realtors also oppose the shift.

The Florida Chamber of Commerce worried about my paycheck.

Since you do not like any of the proposed cuts, why don't you suggest what we can cut to balance the budget? These states have to make cuts in order to avoid economic disaster so lets hear what you think are areas we can find savings in.
We have discussed other ideas to death on this board--it's time to move on.
There are countless experts in each area testifying to senate and house committees everyday in Tallahassee...I have heard all kinds of suggestions for how to balance the budget by increasing revenue;
the committee chairs refuse to hear anything that speaks to a policy that is not in the "play book" they are using. In interviews they admit they will not hear ideas that are not part of the policy they know will pass and be signed by the governor
They are hellbent on destroying state government-- and paving the way for big business and corporations to continue to "rape and pillage" the state.they don't want to hear anything else.
Unless real people stand up for our rights and say enough is enough, then, we will not recognize this state...people will continue to suffer; some will no doubt die; children will not be educated, and our fragile environment that we all claim to love will be gone forever.

Last year - 66 billion in revenue, 70 billion in spending, the difference was borrowed from the Chinese by the federal government. That's what *I* call a free ride on the backs of our children. Go huff and stomp in Beijing, they'll chear you on for sure.
This year however, things are different. 66 billion in revenue, 66 billion in spending. Deal with it.

Average cost of operating State Government, $65 per person per year. Cost to operate Florida Government less than $40. State Workers being taxed, you not paying your fair share. I have never said we shouldn't live within our means, but it seems the folks we elect are only looking to one source to balance the budget, where's your contribution?

I do not want any tax increases and the employee "contribution" is a back-door tax. We do not need more revenue, we need less spending. And I know I pay more than 40 dollars a year in sales tax, not to mention a fee every time I buy a car, sell property, file a paper or even go hunting and fishing. As I am sure my spending is not unusual, I call BS on your 40 dollar figure; either large portions of government operations are being excluded or someone is stealing the money. Just rough numbers, but 66 billion (budget) divided by 13 million people comes to $5076 per person. You know what they say about figures.
