Anybody feel it?...I checked the USGS reports...about a dozen Walton/Okaloosa reports.

Yes, right before 10:00am. Shook the heck out of the house for 5-plus seconds. I thought it was more than just an Eglin bomb.

I felt something over here...but I wasn't sure, because our house is on stilts, sometimes it feels like we're on a boat. Thanks for posting, now I don't feel so crazy. ;-)

Seems like earthquakes and Sundays go hand in hand! The one earthquake my husband felt about 9 months ago was on a Sunday morning here around 9:00 a.m.! I heard a rumbling but never felt any shaking myself as I was walking around the house getting ready for church, but he was in bed! So he felt the shaking! Just wonder why I didn't. We are on the New Madrid fault zone. But we usually do not feel many here. I have a lot of times noticed a little shake of the floor under my feet but these cars that go by down our street with their stereos thumping really loud shake the houses around here. I am sure they occur quite often but so mild that they are not noticed that much. I would imagine that is considered rare down there!

Wow. News reports indicate a 6.0!
SoWal Insider
That's pretty strong! Most of the little quakes felt here are usually around the 4.7 range! I was looking at the USGS map of earthquakes and there was one here at Dyersburg just last week. That is in the northwest part of the state about two hours from us!

The CNN report on the 6.0 quake can be read here:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/09/10/gulf.quake/index.html
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A strong, 6.0 earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico was felt throughout the Southeast but caused no apparent damage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was not powerful enough to trigger a tsunami warning.
The quake, about 250 miles west of Tampa, Florida, was "pretty unusual" for the area, although a 5.2 magnitude quake was recorded nearby in February, said USGS seismic analyst Jessica Sigala.
People as far away as Atlanta -- about 530 miles from the quake's center -- called into local television stations to report feeling tremors at 10:56 a.m. ET.
Sigala said that since the surrounding terrain is fairly flat, the earthquake would travel far and fast. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.2 miles, the USGS said.
About an hour after the earthquake, 904 people from 365 separate ZIP codes in the Southeast had filed online reports to the USGS that they had felt the quake.
Florida and Georgia led the list with hundreds of reports each, while a handful of reports also came from Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana residents.
The most distant reports came from Rosman, North Carolina, and Pickens, South Carolina, both about 600 miles from the quake's center.

I am sure there are alot of faults the U.S.G.S. doesn't know the locations of! I am sure that did make for a interesting Sunday morning!

I did not feel it and I'm very disappointed, but there were a lot of people around here who did. I wish I could say the reason I fell backward on the sidewalk while playing frisbee with my 6 year old this morning and twisted my ankle was because of the earthquake, but that happened at 9:56 a.m., not an hour later. Blaming it on an earthquake rather than my hysterically distended belly would have been sooooo much more convenient.
As it happens my husband is in San Francisco for the weekend. What are the odds he would leave Florida for San Fran and miss an earthquake?

TooFarTampa, are you central time??? If what happened to you occurred at 9:56a.m. and you are on CST and the quake occurred at 10:56 EST then that is probably what happened to you!

I was lying on my couch on the porch this morning and could not figure out why it had begun to shake.
Now I know . thanks sowal! (Pt Wahington)

On Grayton Lake. I attribute the intensity in the house to concrete construction which is rigid and known for its seismic limitations (as witnessed in Pakistan last year)

No such luck Lady D. Eastern time here.
But thanks for trying!directionally challenged
Wonderful  . I was laying in bed on the 3rd floor and thought it was workers with drills or something because I've felt shaking up there before but this morning there was no construction and it seemed to go on forever. I was laying there there thinking I'm gonna sell this damn place. I was actually getting concerned enough that I was gonna get my lazy butt up and go down to the 1st floor and then it stopped. Thanks so much for posting nicdeedoop. An earthquake never would have occurred to me. I wonder if that's what I've felt before

Gulf Earthquake Shakes Up Local Church
Gulf Coast residents experienced a rare earthquake Sunday morning. Preliminary reports from the U.S. Geological Survey, or USGS, say the "earthquake occurred 250 miles (405 km) south-southwest of Apalachicola" at 10:56 AM EDT, and it was a magnitude 6.0 earthquake, which is considered strong.
The quake hit just as members of the Villa Tasso Baptist Church were arriving for morning services. “The building shook so much, we all just swayed a little, it made us look like we were dancing….which of course horrified most everybody.”
Well, not everybody.
Emma Paterson and Yvonne Smith described the experience as ‘invigorating’. “My body has just never moved in that way before, and I kinda liked it.”, Mrs. Paterson went on to explain.
It started a whole debate on the subject of dancing. Male members of the church were very vocal in their outrage at the practice, while some of the ladies commented that an occasional hip gyration might be Ok.
The discussion got a little heated. One member predicted that dancing would lead to rampant moral decline, and even homosexuality. Several members of the congregation went on to say that they felt the whole issue was being blown a bit out of proportion. “I mean no one is suggesting that Justin Timberlake’s Sexy Back, might be incorporated into the hymnal for crying out loud!”
Church leaders have clarified that the issue has been put to rest and that a schism is not likely.

I was so disappointed not to have felt it. I called my brother (he lives near Tampa) to ask if he had felt anything. He didn't. He explained that since we both live on sandy coastal land (he's on Redington Beach, I'm on the bay) and sand doesn't transfer vibrations well, it makes sense that we wouldn't have felt anything. Did I mention he's a geologist? Maybe that will shed some light on why some felt it and some didn't...
