They had to helicopter a guy out this AM near Ramsgate access. Seems he went in to rescue kids caught in the rip tide, then got caught himself. My neighbors said the lifeguard said he was conscious and breathing, so I hope he and the kids turn out fine.
Right there at the beach access the sign says "If there is wind or a red flag, ankle deep is too far". Seems clear to me.

I know those look like LSU colored flags, but they are really yellow and purple, not gold, even though they look gold colored. I should note that this flag is at WaterColor, and since it isn't a public access, I'm not sure if the SWFD is in charge of it. In fairness to the SWFD, this photo was taken the morning after the Seagrove fire, so flags were probably not on the top of the FD's list to change.
No jellies were present at this stretch of beach and the water was smooth as glass with no currents

OK- I have looked and looked for jellyfish and I guess they are totally staying away from the area in Seagrove in front of my mom's. So despite the purple flag, we have been swimming!

were they supposed to be changed?judging by the legend on the sign, if you were the Flag Girl, what flag would you be flying with those conditions? These conditions were similar up and down the beaches of WalCo all morning.
I'm simply trying to show how even the flag system can possibly be extremely confusing for people who are taking time to read and obey the signs.

Sorry about that. These photos were taken at the same time at the same beach. Does that look like a green flag (favorable for swimming) day to you, or a yellow (medium hazard) flag day?

I think your mom is staying next door to where we stayed.
We also swam during yellow/purple days. We were very cautious and didn't stay in long or venture out far. It was too chilly at the time. We never saw jellyfish either. SJ, the water looks incredible.

I don't think you can get more favorable than that right? OH, my heart is aching....

does the fire dept still do the flag changing? maybe they are to tired from fighting fires...

does the fire dept still do the flag changing? maybe they are to tired from fighting fires...On fire alert, yesterday morning, might be more accurate, but too frequently, the flags don't match conditions.
I'm not certain if SWFD is responsible for changing private access flags, like this one in WC, or if WC has to fly whatever flag the SWFD is flying at other beaches. Either way, when the sky does fall, no one will believe chicken little, if this continues.

No, the SWFD does not change private flags, only County flags. The protocol is to evaluate conditions in the morning and then around 1-2pm at a minimum. The SWFD then decides if a change should be made. Also, if conditions change throughout they day (i.e. red to double red) they could change them again.
The adjacent properties are asked/told (I am not sure which) to be at least as conservative as the closest County flag pole since they can be seen from almost anywhere on the beach now.
