Holes on the Beaches

I walk the beach every night from The Compass Inn to the Whale's Tail, and I try and tell the tourists to please fill in there holes that they dig when they are leaving for the night especially during Turtle season.
The holes they dig are huge some are 8-10ft. across and 3-4 ft deep.
I have lived here 29 yrs now and have watched the turtle nests in the area dwindle down to almost 0. I know we need the tourists but we are hurting the turtles too. They have been here longer than us.
The holes are also a hazard to people I know of a person that has broken his leg by stepping in one while walking the beach.
I would like to know how can we get them to fill in the holes!!
Also all these people that walk there dogs on the beach that don't have permits just let their dogs go the bathroom on our beaches and don't pick up after them this is so sad and dirty some just cover it with sand How would you like to step on it or sit in it ? We need the sheriff patrol the beach better! I could go on and on about the way these tourists destroy our beaches but I will stop for now. Does anyone else feel this way??

I don't know how to make them fill in the damn holes.

And I don't know WHY people seem to really be into digging giant holes all of a sudden. Sand castles, a moat, burying someone yes - a HUGE hole that takes that much effort in the hot sun. :idontno:

We spent each evening/night we were there walking a stretch of beach kicking sand back into holes. We decided that would be our job upon retiring.

I have to say regarding the dog poop - We watched a little girl walking her dog and it did its duty (I'm thinking "Oh grayt!"). It wasn't a second but what we saw a mom come running with her bag and cleaned it right up! There are plenty of people out there who do care, but what to do with the jerks? hmmmm .:whack:

I have lots of suggestions - unfortunately none of them are sanctioned by the TDC or the Sheriff.

Katrina Refugee walking his two dogs on the beach told me he just bends over and acts like he's picking it up. :idontno:

That's like vacuuming a piece of string that won't suck up and you bend over, pick it up, roll it into a ball and throw it back down to get sucked up, but it still doesn't get sucked up.

Why go through all that trouble? Just do it!

...they do it because a bag of poop isn't exactly a trendy beach fashion accessory.

...maybe it's a reflection of the economy--deeper recession, deeper holes....booming economy, towering condos. A hole is essentially the opposite of a condo tower, sans GCT and SS of course.

If anyone ever sneaks a backhoe onto the beach one night and digs a 50 foot hole, and in the AM gets 20 of their friends to lie in the bottom in a twisted heap, let me know and I'll take some photos and Saving- Private-Ryan-style video.

Dunno about the backhoe, but the holes I have been filling in in Seagrove could fit 4-5 adults easily.

I love the backhoe idea.
But I say let me have a small bulldozer and I'll fill in the holes!!!
How about the guy that rakes the beach you would think the TDC wants the beaches nice for the tourists That they could get the guy that rakes the beach to rake our beaches??
The turtles would love it too!!!!

Raking beaches is bad. Seaweed and other flotsam help accretion of sand.

I am on the beach at sunset checking on several turtle nests nearing their departure date and I actually carry a rake with me. I have had several people ask me what I am doing with a rake and I tell them I'm going after clams. Gets some sideways glances. I use the rake to fill holes, bury ghost crabs too close to nests and smooth out tracks South of nests. Stuff that wasn't on the beach 10,000 years ago.

I know this may seem like an obvious question, but tell me about the holes and the turtles - I don't dig holes, but I want to educate others as to why it isn't a good idea.

Is it the fact that they get in and can't get out?

Thanks for helping

Little baby turtles have a hard job getting to the water and holes/tire treads/tents etc. make it even harder. They have to use their little newborn flippers to push themselves along, so uneven sand and holes are obstacles.

Holes are also a safety hazard for humans who can twist an ankle, knee, fall etc.

My kids love to go to the beach at sunset to "save the turtles" by filling in everyone elses holes! They get particularly active with it when I say it's time to go. It's hard to enforce bedtime when they are pleading "but what about the baby turtles?"

That is so sweet!! You know, that would make a WONDERFUL children's book. You should seriously consider getting with an illustrator and writing it  Or use actual photographs.

Thanks for sharing and thanks scooter for the explanation. I thought that it might have more to do with the babies than with the adults. Now I know.

I appreciate your patience with newbie questions.

Adult turtles needing to nest sometimes must navigate things left out on the beach, including holes.
They basically have four flipper drive, but they do not have reverse. Should they come up on a hole, they fall in and if they can't climb out the other end, they are stranded until people come along to help.

Being stuck in a hole exposes them to varmints cruising beaches at night. About a week ago, two or three coyotes dug up a nest near Gulf Trace. I have been seeing coyote tracks and fox nearly every time I walk and that means four times a week. They are out there.
