I read that in today's paper. No wonder that woman doesn't want her name publicized--her reward to the cabbie was as meagre as her original 30 cent tip. I mean, can you believe giving him only $100 after what he did for her? She gives Scrooge a good name! I know I wouldn't buy diamonds from a miserable tightwad like her.

I think the cabbie's business will go through the roof, as well it should. He did a wonderful thing.

JMO - I don't think people should be "paid" for doing the right thing.

Nor does the cabbie. He didn't even want to take the miserable $100 to begin with. I do, however, think that tokens of gratitude are a gracious thing to offer, and that has nothing to do with being paid for acting honestly and responsibly.

Then why is it that $100 is a misrable amount? Would you base that token of gratitude on the value of the returned items? Then would it not become a tip or payment. $100 is still alot of money and we really don't know this women's story. What if, for sake of arugment she was not the owner of the rings. Maybe she's a courier and she didn't want her name published because if it came out that she misplaced the rings it could cost her job. Would $100 still be a mirable amount?

That's an interesting take on the story, and you're absolutely right that maybe she wasn't the owner. What rankles me though about the $100--which I still consider an embarassingly paltry amount to gift the cabbie--is that I think she WAS the owner, and she's a skinflint. Decent people don't hire a taxi and give 30 cent tips. If someone is on a budget, they take the bus or the subway. Both are plentiful and safe in the city. They don't cheat hard-working honest cabbies of the tips they depend on. To me, it's not ethical, and it's something you just don't do.

It boggles my mind how you could leave $30K worth of diamonds behind, though. I bet there's a story behind that one.

I think $100 is a great price to pay for a bag of diamonds, especially when they are not yours! Such a deal....

Poor Beachbummett, when she checks her luggage and realizes her jewels are gone! O the horror! The insanity!

She's really gonna need our support when she discovers her loss. Of course VD is just around the corner - time to go shopping!:D

VD!?!? Right around the corner? Yikes... At least she know's they're coming. VD warnings are better than just finding them one day.

One thing that bothers me about the story on that link is if you look real close in the #2 picture you could just about figure out her name. Lisa Brew something or other....you could probably enhance it and figure it out!

Lisa Brew, as is "Lisa, brew up some coffee while we count the loot!"

As always we don't know the whole story so we can't judge. And even if we did, we shouldn't judge. The cabbie did the right thing though. Her initial tip however... I mean I'm not rolling in it, but I always overtip.

Here come da judge, here come da judge.
Wow, was that a flashback from Laugh-In? Am I that old?

Insurance money?????

Aha! I bet this is how it really plays out: jeweler stiffs the cabbie his tip, leaves behind a fortune in rocks (in retrospect, isn't it a bit suspicious that she put them in the trunk in the first place, when any other sane person would have had them handcuffed to their wrist??) and hopes that he'll be pi$$ed enough at her to keep the jewels. End of story. She collects big bucks on insurance; cabbie is quietly a richer man.

Instead, she's lucky--or unlucky, depending on whose side you're on--enough to find an honest cabbie who doesn't even consider what kind of person she is. He only knows he has to return property that isn't his. He tracks her down, she's exposed, but she's pis$$ed enough at him that she reluctantly gives him $100, only because the media is watching.

Yes, I have a cynical mind. Too many film noirs from Netflix, I gues.

I wondered myself how one would forget a case full of diamonds. :idontno:
