We had a faculty workshop on Friday in which the speaker focused on how we can relate to our students who are part of the Millennial Generation (defined as being born in the mid-70s through the mid-90s). We used clickers. 34% of us are baby-boomers (born from 1946-1964), and 28% of us are Generation X'ers (born mid-60s through mid 70s). If we can better relate to our students, the idea is that it can help us be better teachers.

One of the things we talked about is that important for us to be aware of pop culture and, more importantly, to not disparage or dismiss it. Remember what made you roll your eyes when you were young? When your parents were clueless about pop culture? When they always talked about the past?

To not act old, one should be aware of the music, movies, fashions, language, etc., that younger people are interested in. Don't act clueless about technology. Act like you know what Facebook, Twitter, etc., are even if you don't (and if you don't, welcome to 2011). But as our daughter says, don't adopt their culture. Someone my age looks ludicrous wearing what they wear from Abercrombie, Gap, J. Crew, etc. (except for a few classic pieces), using their language, listening to their music (except in private ), etc. Don't start a sentence with "back when." Don't talk about the past with them (unless the past means last year).

The only oops thng about the workshop was that for different goals in determining whether our faculty is relating to millennials, we had to grade ourselves as achieving these goals as "never" (which she called "out of the groove"), "sometimes" (which she called "groovin' "), and "frequently" (which she called "totally groovy"). As the mother of a millennial who keeps me up-to-date, I told her that she'd better not use those three terms because they mean something of a sexual nature and that she might want to visit urbandictionary.com. She laughed and said she would. She was not offended.

Yep, this is pretty much what the book says. I don't think there's a chance in hell I'll ever be guilty of adopting their culture. And, I totally am guilty of telling them stories of "back when". Hail, I had to endure those stories and I think I turned out ok. I'm just paying it forward.:lol:
