IRS refund scam

Be Aware:
I just received quite an official looking email from the "IRS" and that their calculations show that I'm due an IRS refund in the amount of $xxx.xx and I must file the refund request, etc. etc.

Since I didn't remember ever providing an email address to the IRS, I contacted my CPA who assures me this is a scam.
He plans to report this to the appropriate officials.

The IRS will never communicate with you via email.

There is a similar one that claims to be from your bank saying there has been a security issue and you need to provide/verify your information.

:lolabove: Hey AL! We must be cousins!!!

I KNOW right??? That threat was one of the things that made it seem so kinda... IRS-like.

It's embarrassing because I'm not usually such a ... potential dizbow. Thankfully my "check the facts ma'am" radar kicked in.

That's the tip off. Unless you actually sign something, or there are witnesses, you can lie with impunity. Otherwise, how could they prove it's you? I think that threat is probably what tipped you off and I think they would fool more people if they left it out.

Darn. I saw the name of this thread and thought it was a way to scam the IRS into giving me a refund.
