Is something on fire in our area again?

Is the wood smoke which I am smelling outside right now blowing over from the fires in Eastern FL or is something burning locally? I can tell that the winds have changed this afternoon because the air is cool outside. I am guessing that this smoke is coming from fires very distant to us. Anyone else know differently?

Probably a good guess. Over the past 10 days we've had two cooling spells and almost immediately, we were choked with smoke from fires that were hundreds of miles away. Last Friday morning it was clear and cool and very pretty when I drove my older son to school at 8 a.m. I was thinking how great it would be to have a cool day with no smoke ... and 30 minutes later, ash was falling, the air was thick and heavy, and nobody wanted to go outside.

Apparently it's called "temperature inversion," where the cool air traps smoke closer to the ground. It roared in from the Gulf and dropped ash on cars and people etc.

This weekend the weather is supposed to turn cool again and they predict more smoke. Rest easy guys I bet it is what is happening to you. It moves in really fast. :bang:

It seems a bit better this morning. Did anybody hear anything about last night's smoke?

Is something on fire again? First time I've experienced the smokey smell. It's nauseating to me.

Hope everything is okay.

I think the high amounts of moisture in the air is holding down the smell of smoke. As the moisture burns off, I am guessing the smoke smell will dissipate.

Hopefully. Until it does, I'm staying inside.

I noticed it when I let the dogs out this morning, but I thought it was Hippie Paul's BBQ pit offering up a smelly swan song:lol:

Windis from the east, so I guess we are getting smoke from the other Florida and Georgia fires.

Maybe PHead's worst fears regarding DRex flinging cigarette butts around have materialized:trainwreck:

A friend called said he checked with Fire Dept. and smell is coming from Lake City fires. Winds are blowing east, so we get it.

We are getting the smoke from Georgia here as well. They have advised people with respatory problems to stay inside. I think it was worse yesterday though.

Yep, that's what the local news people were saying this morning. At least the east wind is bringing in some moisture from the Atlantic too, and we may get another pop-up rain like last night.

I posted this on another thread here, but thought you all might like to see it as well. It shows where the smoke is coming from & going to. Thought it was interesting.

Per the Daily Fishwrapper, the smoke is presumed to be coming from the Lake City fires, but the Division of Forestry is sending up a plane as a precaution to make sure a new fire hasn't started up further to the west of that.

I heard that today there is a strong smell of smoke south of Montgomery. Must be drifting in from FL/GA.
