5th-graders accused of sex in La. school
Students left in classroom unsupervised

Updated: 5:05 p.m. CT April 6, 2007
NEW ORLEANS - Five fifth-grade students face criminal charges after authorities said four of them had sex in front of other students in an unsupervised classroom and kept a classmate posted as a lookout for teachers.

The students were arrested Tuesday at the Spearsville school in rural north Louisiana, authorities said. Two 11-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year old boy were charged with obscenity, a felony. An 11-year-old boy, the alleged guard, was charged with being an accessory.

"After 44 years of doing this work, nothing shocks me anymore," said Union Parish Sheriff Bob Buckley. "But this comes pretty close."

Authorities said the incident happened March 27 at the school, which houses students from kindergarten through 12th grade. A high school teacher normally watches the fifth-grade class at the time, but went to an assembly for older students and the class was inadvertently left unattended, Buckley said.

The class, which had around 10 other students, was alone for about 15 minutes, he said.

"When no teacher showed up, the four began to have sex in the classroom with the other elementary students in the classroom with them," he said.

It took a day for authorities to find out about the incident. A student who had been in the class told a high school student about it the next day, Buckley said. The student told a teacher, and school officials notified the sheriff's office. Detectives began questioning students Thursday.

School officials did not return calls seeking comment.

The students, who were not identified because of their age, were released to their parents after their arrests, Buckley said. They will next be arraigned in juvenile court. A message seeking comment from the district attorney was not immediately returned.

Buckley said it was unclear what the children could face in penalties.

I looked at this a couple of times and couldn't respond. This is so disturbing. I am praying for these kids, parents and teachers/administrators, that they are able to help them through this. They all need counseling. It makes me cry thinking of 5th graders actually doing this and the rest exposed to it.

Doesn't make you upset that it could happen anywhere? How could it happen? It makes a good case for home schooling.

:lolabove: The biggest trouble I got into in school was in 5th grade. The boy next to me was picking on me during class, so I punched him in the arm and he told on me.

At that age when we were growing up most girls were flat as boards on top and had no hips or shape to them. Not the case now at 10 years old.

Seriously though, this is really sad. I would say that most 5th graders are still fairly innocent. You can't lump all of them together. This is one particular story. I know kids now a days are exposed to a lot more than we were but this whole incident was just wrong. Like Supermom said, these kids need counseling. We don't know the whole story but I'm betting there are serious family issues going on.

Let me go out on a very thick limb and guess there are serious lack of family issues going on, if you catch my drift:bang:

I agree BB, but am not surprised. 25 years ago, oh my  does that make me old???...my first year teaching, two students on our field trip were caught "on top of each other". I was not 10 feet away, and it happened as I was helping another child. About 2 years ago at another school, two students were having oral sex and the rest of the class stood around watching.  :( :puke: It was during the time where the students changed clothes in gym.

Of course these incidents are exceptions, but I feel society portrays relationships very casual. Too much suggestive and sexual behavior on tv, videos, chat rooms etc. And why do the parents or guardians allow children to watch such crap???
