Torture didn't, waterboarding did.
Neither torture nor waterboarding led us to the information. That was the whole point of the article.

" “I have sought further information from the staff of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and they confirm for me that, in fact, the best intelligence gained from a CIA detainee — information describing Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti’s real role in Al-Qaeda and his true relationship to Osama bin Laden — was obtained through standard, non-coercive means, not through any ‘enhanced interrogation technique.’
“In short, it was not torture or cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of detainees that got us the major leads that ultimately enabled our intelligence community to find Osama bin Laden. I hope former Attorney General Mukasey will correct his misstatement. It’s important that he do so because we are again engaged in this important debate, with much at stake for America’s security and reputation. Each side should make its own case, but do so without making up its own facts." - McCain

Kudos to him for keeping this going and publicly asking the proper people to tell the truth instead of playing politics. Stuff like this is why I have always respected McCain.

Not only did we not get information that helped us get Bin Laden from torture/waterboarding, the search for Bin Laden was HAMPERED by false information obtained through waterboarding.

I greatly respect McCain's military service & time as POW.
I respected him when he was a true Maverick in the GOP, telling truth to power, supporting comprehensive immigration reform, opposing (originally) the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, calling Falwell & Robertson "merchants of hate," proposing a health care reform plan arguably better than what ultimately got passed, etc. etc....I lost some respect when he sold out many of his mavericky/principled positions in his effort to get the GOP nomination & in the presidential election & his embittered stage in the yr+ after his defeat. I hope this "new McCain" is more like the old McCain & less like candidate McCain.

The new McCain is the result of yet another software patch. Give him some time and he'll crash yet again.

Or maybe he has learned to not play politricks/listen to his advisers, and we have a strong and respected representative who could bring about non-partisan reform when it is most needed.

Exactly why I did not support him for the nomination and had to hold my nose to vote for him in the election because he was the lessor of two evils.

he is the "poster senator" for putting winning above principle...

I had a lot of respect for him before he let Palin be part of his campaign. I do believe he believes what he says about torture and I am glad he is standing up again...but, I also believe it is only because his seat is safe and he does not feel the need to pander. He would do it again, unfortunately, if he thought he was in jeopardy.

He just proves his own point: when under duress, one will say whatever one thinks the "enemy" or "other side" wants to hear...

I nominate Mitt Romney as the "poster ex-Governor" or "poster presidential candidate" for putting winning above principle.
As Governor of Mass. Romney was pro-choice, pro-health care, pro-gay rights, anti-gun.
Now, seeking the GOP presidential nomination, he's flip-flopped on all these & maybe more issues.

I agree. It will be interesting to see how he continues to try and rewrite his own record...

.

As an Independent voter, these are Republicans that I could possibly support if they ran on their records and ideals. As opposed to the socially conservative types who are laying it on thick to the republican base.

Romney's a pandering, plastic, "stick your finger in the air to judge what direction to take" politician who lacks core principle. He's always been that way, nothing has changed.

Since when is waterboarding not torture?

I don't know. Since when did a drowning victim not suffer on the way to his death? This is insane because even after the torture victim has revealed everythind he knows, the torture isn't going to end.

you did not have to do anything, you liked the crap spewed by palin, and if lined up before a firing squad and asked if waterboarding is torture, that you die with the wrong answer, you would admit the truth

translated, he's mormon, is a straight up family guy, is a centrist, does not pander to the redneck kneejerk agenda, and is intelligent enough to change his mind when presented to new facts.

I honestly cannot extract any meaning or sense from the above "sentence."
Bob, could you please restate your point? I missed it entirely.

Get another translator, yours clearly doesn't speak my language. ;-)
