Ok...this morning, I watched all my Tivo'd Oprahs and one of them dealt with organization. I feel so motivated!! Mermy--help me out here. I'm gonna start with about 30 years worth of photos that are crammed into one big box. What's the best way? Albums, boxes by the year, trash:eek: . Then after that, it on to the "computer/craft/library room....I just keep thinking I would hate for anyone to put this room on TV:eek: . Purge, purge, purge!!! I know that's the ticket!!

DD, I've been going to the library and checking out books on de-cluttering and organizing. There are hundreds of books on the subject. Evidently it is a problem everyone has.

I've learned two things from all this reading:

1. Rome was not built in a day. You can't accumulate decades of stuff and expect to get rid of it in a weekend. It ain't gonna happen, so don't put unfair pressure on yourself to accomplish the unthinkable.

2. A lot of stuff is hard to throw away because of the emotional attachment you have to it: case in point, photographs. It's not just "stuff;" it's precious stuff. It's hard to let go to things that have meaning and memory. That's where I think the library books have come in handy. Authors are finally picking up on the WHYs of clutter and writing about how to deal with that. I think you have to clear your head before you clear your house. If you can let go in your mind, the rest follows suit. Slowly but surely.

So I say hit the stacks at the local library, see what you come up with and then plan the method of attack that suits you best.

Don't you feel better now that you've cleaned those drawers out? I know I do!!

You have no idea how many times I've opened those drawers and cabinets this weekend and just smiled at the empty space!

Now Mermy, why would I go to the library when I have YOU!!!
Seriously, this is sooooo right. I think I became a lot less emotionally attached this weekend. I'm just tired of it....those fuzzy, third copies of pics are OUTTA HERE!!
That guy on Oprah said there is always an underlying problem why you have all that "stuff"...and I don't particularly want to go there, but I'm sure he's right. I just love the liberation of feeling so much lighter! If I'm not gonna lose pounds, at least I can get rid of all this other crap.

i read somewhere that if you haven't used an object in one year, you don't need it, throw it out....

AND . . . paying for storage on things we must be able to live without or we would have them in our house. I told my husband once that we didn't need a bigger house - we just need a big barn.

The description said "a good read for the pack rat." Is it useful information or just things you already know?

No, actually, it was full of good info, but to tell you the truth, the feng shui was a bit of a stretch. It was 95% decluttering advice and how-to, and maybe 5% feng shui. I don't know why that was in the title but it was a pretty handy book irregardless. I'm pretty sure you can "look" inside the book on amazon's website.

I am organizing.
Does anyone know how to either build closets, add an addition to the house, or increase the pitch of a roof?

No sh*t, Mango!! I've carried out three garbage bags and a couple of boxes full of crap and I still don't have a place for everything! And, I've just now gotten down to the dreaded box of photos. That may have to wait for another day. So, to answer your question...ah, no. If you get any ideas, pass them on.

This reminds me of something I told Miss Kitty. When I do the old heave-ho to junk around the house, I don't immediately carry any bags out. I leave them in the hall for the man of the house to see. After all these years of marriage, he is well-trained to say "Wow! You've been doing a lot of work!" rather than "What's all this crap blocking the hallway for?"

I don't have any junk. I just have don't have enough closet space.
When you have winter coats and sweaters they take up lots of room in closets. I need to move somewhere where I can just stay nekkid all year round. :D

You want some junk?:D
