Hey Gang,
I'm over-nighting in Nashville soon. I have some research to do at the Tennessee state archives so would like to stay at a nice (but reasonably priced) downtown hotel within walking distance of the library.
I've never been to Nashville. Any feedback on walking safety of the downtown area, as well as hotel or restaurant recommendations is much appreciated!!
Thanks!

You have lots of choices.
Very convenient to the State Archives would be the Sheraton Downtown, The Hermitage Hotel, Homewood Suites, Renaissance Hotel. Not quite as close (but guessing about 5 blocks would be
Marriott Courtyard and also a Hilton. Since I live here, can't really
give you an actual hotel review of any of these....but don't think you could go wrong....just check for reviews on www.tripadvisor.com
once you decide which location might work best for you.
As for restaurants....depends on what you're looking for....there is a great Morton's in that area....very close. It's really the only downtown restaurant that I've been to in ages....if you are looking for something specific and don't mind driving or cabbing...can make some good recommendations. Just pm me for more. There are a lot of "tourist" spots on Broadway with many choices. Check out www.ryman.com to see what entertainment there might be during your stay. It is an amazing venue....small and just so much better than going to the giant concert venues, etc.....often top performers appear at the Ryman....it is downtown of course. A real gem!!
It's quite safe downtown. We actually have a Metro Police Station located on Broadway, next to the Bridgestone Arena so there seems to be a lot of "security".... Overall, I'd say just be as aware as you'd be in any busy spot...and I'd be comfortable on my own in downtown Nashville.
Also downtown is the Frist Center for Visual Arts, a terrific downtown Public Library, several historic churches, and just behind the State Capitol and Archives is the BiCentennial Mall (commemorative....not shopping!)
Hope that helps and that you have a very enjoyable & productive visit!

Stay at Union Station. It's the old restored train station. Really nice place just 4 blocks from the bulk of downtown...

Wow looks like a gorgeous hotel!! A bit out of my lodging range, but definitely worth stopping for a cocktail and looky-loo at a sensational structure. Thx!

Be sure to check for it on Hotels.com, Priceline, and Orbitz before you write it off!
