OK, I know alot of these women on here are kitty cat lovers! My son and his wife have 3 new additions to their apartment. Nia, Charlotte, and Piper. 5 weeks old! Two black and white, and one white! There are already other cats in the apartment, 3 more to be exact, Cammy, Patty and Caesar. Caesar is fixed thank goodness. And of course Cammy, Patty and Caesar are hissing at the other 3 new additions. How long does it normally take for cats to get used to other cats. I know someone recently got a cat from the shelter. And isn't five weeks kind of young to be away from mom, or not? Also, I would like to get some cute little toys for them. I watch this show on Saturday mornings called Pet Keeping with Marc Marrone. He showcases different animal groups every week. They are already playing with these toy mice and the balls with bells inside them. Anything else I can get them to play with as my gift to them as I am going to have to go and see them. They have already asked me over! Thanks.

They need to consult their vet ASAP. There are too many issues going on between the age of the kittens, bringing such small cats to live with adult cats, etc., and they will have the most success with professional advice. Also, if the other 2 adult cats are not altered, they need to be soon.

 Ok, sorry I did not include this. Just thought about this. Of course, Cammy and Patty are female also as are the other 3 kittens. Caesar is 8, while Cammy and Patty are no more than a year old. So since they are so young, I am thinking they will take to the others eventually! They are very playful. I know they need to ask a vet but whether they will do so is another story!

That adds up to 5 spays- hope their vet gives your son and daughter-in-law a volume discount! Maybe instead of cat toys, you can start a fund to get these little girls fixed- way more important.

So it is necessary to get female cats spayed even though the only male is neutered. I have never owned cats before. Always dogs. And they are strictly indoor cats. Have never even tried to go out! Does it calm their temperament when they are spayed???

As I said, they need to talk to their vet. Owning pets is a huge responsibilty, and part of that is their health and welfare.

I may as well put money aside for that. Although, I cannot guarantee they will listen to any advice from me! I thought 3 was plenty, I knew they were going but they said they were going to get one and ended up with 3 more. And there were 5 in the litter. But she has always had cats and her parents still do.

will the girl cats be inside ForEver? Kinda like an invisible fence. Keeps your pets in but what the heck does it keep out?! YEAH! I'd run to the vet for that discount! :nono1::doh:

Anytime we introduced a new kitten into the house we kept it isolated from the other cats for a while. The kitten stayed in a small bathroom with food, water and litter whenever we were not right there with it. The older cats were gradually introduced to the new one over time and when they realized that the new one was no threat, they co-existed peacefully. Seems like it only took about a week or so.

However, it's a good idea to always to consult the vet and always spay and neuter. It's not a pretty or quiet sight to see a female cat in heat, and it can't be pleasant for the cat--so I would definitely spay this kitten ASAP. Hope they take your advice!

 I hope so also. Right now they are keeping the three of them together in one bedroom with their own litter box in the bathroom and food and water and that is where they are separated off from the other cats during the day when they are at work. They bring them out after they get home. I can imagine introducing one cat to the other cats, but not three more! Will have to start calling her Ellie Mae Clampett!

I agree with everyone...get them spayed..you never know when they will get out the door. I had 18 cats at one time back in my younger years and they were all fixed. Vets generally give a discount and it seems to me that the ones in the country are cheaper than the ones in the city...

as far as them getting along it will take time...

5 weeks is a bit young, I believe that they should be around 8 weeks

Good Luck and if she does not like to listen to you then email her this thread with all the comments you made about her taken out...😀

As the owner of three female cats (all of whom I've had since kittens), I can say.. they WILL want to have them spayed. Not only because of the chance that they might get out and end up with unwanted kittens, but because cats in heat are a PITA!!! Cats will start going in heat at around one year of age, and some cats, if they aren't bred, will go back in every couple of weeks.
Talk about annoying!
I remember once, I was studying for a final, and my cat would NOT SHUT UP. I had to put her in a cat carrier out on the (fenced) back patio just to get some peace.
Anyway, congrats on the new additions.. and where are the pics??

Six cats in one apartment (small apartment?) doesn't sound very good to me. At one time several years back we had four cats. It all happened really gradually--first two cats for at least six years, then a new kitten stray, and then about three years after that another adult stray. Introducing that fourth cat tipped the harmonious feline living and all hell broke loose. All were individually wonderful cats, sweet enough to convert even hardened cat haters  , but together, it was a disaster. Three of the cats couldn't cope and the spraying started. And yes, all were spayed females. You wouldn't believe the good furniture that was damaged!! We finally had to find homes for the three who turned neurotic, which was very traumatic for us, and even more so for our kids, who loved all their pets.

Cats aren't made for communal living, so don't be surprised if something like this doesn't happen with six felines co-existing in one confined space. Just try not to roll your eyes and tell them that you knew it was a dumb idea to run a kitty kibbutz. It won't be appreciated.

You're right, Mermaid...one cat just leads to another.

I remember how shocked I was when our spayed cat still sprayed once. I called the vet and found out that they can and will spray when stressed or upset.

It happens with puppies, too. It's easy to be soft-hearted when these adorable little four-legged homeless baby creatures come your way. Unfortunately, good intentions don't always turn out the way we want them to. Sad but true.

I agree. At least they are in a two bedroom now. When they first got the first two females, they were in a one bedroom. Now at least they can explore a little bit. Haven't got any pics yet. Have pics of the others though. Haven't been over to see them yet. Will put some pics on here some time tomorrow of the three they have had for a while. I will try and get some pics this week.

I did mention the spay thing to my son as to the females. Especially the two that are barely over a year old. One of them is doing the weird meowing that comes with being in heat unfortunately. I explained to him that they can make a mess in the apartment and if agitated by another cat will often spray. Explained that even getting one done at a time would be better than nothing. Not much of a response out of him.Might go tonight and see the 3 new additions and get some pics. If not tonight, tomorrow night. If and when I do I will post them on the photo gallery.

Well, I have pictures of the new additions on the General Photo Gallery. Imagine my surprise when I found out two of the kittens are actually males. So their names are Tristan, Rory, and Mia. So Cute. Each one of us was holding one and they all three were asleep at the same time. So small though! Thank goodness you can click on the actual picture and make them bigger. Enjoy the pics!
