I would have thought at least double that.

Same, kind of shocked at that number, but that's a state wide average as I imagine double would be more realistic locally. I'm sure you could make that number work in Freeport or Defuniak Springs.

Make it work maybe but middle class? If there is such a thing. Wouldn't it have to include several cars, a nice house, savings, vacations, college....

Honestly in the finance world if you can cover a $400 unexpected expense you are considered middle class.

I didn't know this. It's scary. I've read the majority of Americans can't cover $1,000 unexpected. So they have to borrow or use a credit card. What a tragedy that banks and corporations and their minions in Washington have a new type of slavery. And if I say that we should have free health care I'm labeled un-American by those same slaves.

Obviously the people at Consumer Affairs do not have children :) Daycare, healthcare, food, shelter, education, travel etc. is off the charts expensive for a family of four. My wife and I have spent a small fortune on our children and I have no idea how anyone could do it for less than $100,000.00 per year income and that is for just the basic necessities AND that was almost 40 years ago!!! My children are now telling me that Daycare is more than a mortgage payment. There seems to be a discrepancy between that number and reality. Middle class must be the new struggling to make ends meet class...

According to this article that's the minimum in Florida you need to make as a family of four to be considered middle class.

The article is based on this calculator

Middle class ain't what it used to be.

The actual statistic is that 50% of Americans can't cover an unexpected expense of $400 at all. Meaning it would have to come out of food, housing or transportation. If you have a savings account you are in the top 25th percentile of Americans. If you have any amount of retirement savings, not including social security, you are in the top 20th percentile.

Very sobering. Especially when every year we see millions on our beaches, many spending 5 figures for a week. And so many with 2nd homes here. Really puts SoWal in perspective.
