Hi everyone. Sorry I have not been on in a while. i've had a lot going on the past couple of months. A few Sowalers on my facebook friends list are aware of what I've been through. It's been hard for me to deal with. My 90 year old father passed away April 1st from the effects of final stage Alzheimers. I as well as my mother had tended to my dad at their home and had to witness the daily decline of his health during the 6 weeks before his death. This week is going to be especially hard as his 91st birthday would be this Thursday, May 5th. It's going to be especially hard for my mom as they were married 62 years. I was not present when my father passed away, I was not told of his passing until after he had died. It was so hard to see him laying lifeless, I was in a state of denial about his not going to recover prior to his death but finally had to accept the inevitable. This has caused a lot of anxiety for me this past 2 months and more so now since he has passed. Just had to talk about it. Hope this is ok.

Oh, Lady D. I'm so sorry for your loss. Having nursed 2 parents and a couple of childless aunts and uncles through the final stages of life, I feel your pain, sadness and loss. It is hard to face the regular world when your focus has been on care giving, but I assure you, time doesn't heal everything, but it makes it easier to handle. Keep your chin up and take each day one hour at a time. Thinking of you. Message if you need to talk. I've been there a bunch.

Of course it is ok! I needed to do same after nursing my father before he passed. It helps to share and ameliaj's post was very supportive and I couldn't have said it better.

Bless your mom's heart - 62 years of marriage - how sweet is that.

Sending support your way

Thanks DD. I've been to the cemetery twice since he died to see his crypt. I actually stayed after the service to see his entombment, my mom didn't but I wanted to see him taken care of right to the end, and did.

So sorry to hear about your dad Lady D. I know how though it is to lose a parent. Alzheimers took my only sister as well and it is a terrible disease. I am keeping you in my prayers. Bless your heart.

Thanks everyone, this has really increased my anxiety and stress. Seeing him unresponsive the last 3 days was hard, he tried to talk to me but couldn't. So sad and pitiful. But he is in a better place now and that my mom and I are grateful for as he would not have liked living the way he was, had he known, he had gotten to where he knew no one anymore or anything anymore.

So sorry. Mom was diagnosed with dementia about ten years ago, but looking back on it, I realized that there were signs much earlier (such as she forgot how to make her spaghetti sauce which had been her signature dish forever). We had to move her to an assisted-living facility in 2007 because we all work full-time, and paying for 24-7 in-home care would have cost $100,000 a year. She was diagnosed with end-stage Alzheimer's, and when she ate she had to be told to chew and swallow. In April 2009 she got a blood clot due to atrial fibrillation. The doctor told us to get our sister in Dallas to Atlanta immediately because Mom had end-stage breathing. I believe in the power of prayer, and not only did she not die, but she got too well for hospice and then too well for a nursing home. So last April we moved her into an assisted-living facility. She gets better and better. I took her to her doctor recently for a checkup and told him that I think that the Coumadin she's on for the heart problem has given her better blood flow to her brain, and thus better cognitive skills. At first he scoffed at my theory, but then he said that my theory is correct.

Now Mom is anxious for our visits, likes to get out and about, and loves dining out with us.

Sorry, Lady D, that your father didn't have this positive outcome. But any of you who read this post might want to discuss Coumadin with your parent's MD if s/he has Alzheimer's.

They don't call me "Doctor R" for nothing. It's more than just mathematics, computer science, and art history. I am a hypochondriac, so I folow medical news. I'd go to med school in a flash if I weren't too old to get accepted. I have saved the lives of many students and their children with my medical advice.

Lady D, you are in my prayers.

BR, that is encouraging news about your mother, glad you've had a good outcome. My dad was on so many different medications for his heart, Alzheimers, etc. His heart pumping had reduced from 50% 6 months prior to his hospitalization to 20% when he went in the hospital. I think the Alzheimers was the main cause of death, and he was 90. He outlived both his parents and brother and sister by a good many years.

Hi Lady D,

I'm sad for you not having your dad anymore, but I'm glad you got to spend along time with him on the earth, bless your heart, even though it was sad at the end. I still miss my dad, but got to say goodbye to him. He died of cancer. I hate the bad things that happen here, but I try to remember the good things that happened with those that I love that are no longer here.
