Republican Senator Graham said today that President Obama lost his "moral authority" because he showed himself to be a "partisan president".
Does anyone else find this a strange thing to say within the context of the healthcare reform bill (the same one that not a single Republican voted for)?
I mean- any other president with any other congress could have proposed that we make Newark the new Capitol city and at least a half dozen in the opposing minority party would have voted for it. So how could Graham keep a straight face and point out any Dem's partisianship???
I get it that reconciliation rubbed folks wrong. But all that did was get us to a vote. Everyone still had a vote.

This morning, Senator George LeMieux emailed his most recent newsletter which included the following on the student loans from the "Health Care" reconciliation bill:
Sen. LeMieux Newsletter
Stop the Federal Takeovers
Included in the health care "fixer" legislation called the reconciliation bill, are provisions allowing the federal government to take over the student loan program. This will deprive 15 million students the ability to choose among 2,000 lenders and force them into the federal student loan system.
What's more, under this legislation Washington would eliminate an estimated 31,000 jobs - including 1,200 in Florida. Recently, I visited the Sallie Mae facilities near Panama City, FL. I made clear my support for a solution that protects these private sector jobs in a fiscally prudent way.
During debate, I asked colleagues to halt the takeover at least until Congress could explore the issue and find a bipartisan solution.
Unfortunately, the majority wouldn't even let my amendment come to a vote. This federal takeover will have become law without a single congressional hearing on the substance of the provisions.
On health care, student loans, and a number of other national issues, Washington lawmakers need to listen to the concerns of Floridians and others around the nation and conduct the people's work in an open and transparent fashion. Americans expect and deserve to see, hear and provide input on the process of lawmaking. Anything less is a disservice to the democratic process.

Toes, good post. I agree with your conclusion that bipartisianship occurred. But it wasn't bidirectional.

So who are you going to believe, Murray - The Wall Street Journal, a certified financial planner and someone with experience in the field of student lending have all told you that this is not the case, and you get an email from a politician and you share that as some sort of news? For somebody who rails against politicians as much as you do, it doesn't even make sense.

Was I the only one who caught that this was done to END BILLIONS in subsidies to private banks?

Same with all the large companies crying foul. They have been getting subsidies for their retiree medication plans AND getting to take them off their taxes at the same time? WTH???

Yes- Fox has been airing the protests of the banks and insurance companies as proof that this bill already isn't working.

Too bad they are not telling why and how they have been getting a double bonus from the Gov that was supposed to be about smaller government.

"Under financial-aid provisions in the bill, all students and parents beginning next fall will borrow directly from the federal government, ending a program in which the government subsidized private lenders to provide federal loans"
Full story can be found on www.wsj.com
Part of the left stream media ya' know.
I can assure you that private funds will still be coming from banks, student loans are a very complex financial model, and there's just no way the banks would have allowed this.
The government will take over the servicing portion of loans, this means that interest subsidies normally paid by the government to private servicers will stop.

SWGB, a difference or you sure about that?
At least learn the difference between socialism and communism.
Communism A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people. BELIEVE THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE OBAMA GANG AND HIS FELLOW DEMOCRATS...
so?cial?ism Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy. Sounds like our government since Obama took over, cars, banks, health, college loans, and who knows what else.
Your point?

You seem to love your talking points, but could you point out where Obama took over cars and banks?
As to college loans he didn't take over anything. College Loans are offered under Title IV funding and until this law was passed was offered through a very few private businesses. Those private businesses started out as Federal programs and slowly became private entities.
I'm still not seeing the proof that the government has taken over health care, if they had one would then assume that the health insurance and pharma stocks that have seen a huge increase since the bill was signed are just abnormalities? Who would invest in something that's about to be taken over by the government?

Automobile bailouts that make the federal government their boss so to speak, in charge of salaries, bonuses, etc. In fact they are even suggesting cars that they should be built. My tax money was used for this take over by my government.
Banks and financial organizations bailed out, being told by the government now how to run their institutions. Salaries and bonuses dictated by the government. My tax money was used for this bailout and take over by my government.
The student loan overhaul fulfills a long-time goal of Democratic lawmakers to end the bankers' role as middlemen and replace them with direct federal loans and aid to students. ( this little dittie was stuck or rather hidden in a health care bill.) The change will cap college graduates' annual student loan repayments at 10 percent of their income, and awards $2.55 billion to historically black colleges and universities. And why should 'special" schools get such a big bulk of tax payers money....why not take those billions and spread them to all schools.
I also wonder if this "loan takeover" will also not be used to select who gets these loans. I also wonder just how many of these loans willnot be fully paid back by some of the borrowers. The government doesn't have a good record of book keeping or running programs. The funny thing is that the government is already predicting how much money will be saved by this take over and already spending it.
As far as Health Care goes...give it time...give it time...there are so many hidden "Treats and Tricks" in that 2000 + page bill that Obama signed...that had so many special deals tucked into it to get the vote.... that we all are going to be surprised and also hurt by it....just give it time.

In principle, I don't want govt getting bigger and I don't like when unrelated items are bundled together in bills. That said- Other than some folks losing their jobs I don't see any downside to the student loan changes.

Glad you know better than Me, SWGB. (SMIRK)
I don't believe anyone really knows what is going to really happen with the student loans...hey, most of us didn't even realize that student loans had anything to do with Health Care reform...it was one of those little surprises that showed itself after the bill was signed...and as we unwrap the layers we keep finding another little box of surprises inside. I suggest SWGB that even you were surprised on this one. Hey I don't watch Glen ...I do read the Gov. web page put out by the Obama group...I assume that they know what they are talking about...and what I wrote is my opinion based on what I read on that webpage. Since I am so wrong in your opinion, what reading source would you suggest I use, since you seem to be all knowing in this area?

SWGB once worked for Sallie Mae - as a result he is one of the few people who actually understands the whole process and how messed up it is.
Based on some of the stories and IMO predatory tactics I have heard over the years about them, I have absolutely no problem w/ them losing subsidies and this easy way to screw people on technicalities.

Despite the very partisan whining that SallieMae did on the local news, the only reason they'll be shutting down any of there centers will be of their own choosing. SallieMae currently has a portfolio of around $500 Billion worth of government student loans that they will be able to finish servicing. In addition they have twice that in private student loans and the US government can't issue private student loans. For all of SallieMae's whining they'll be fine. There biggest problem was their management and self insured private student loans.

Let me assure you that the US governments financial track record makes them look like money watching hawks compared to SallieMae.I admittedly know nothing about SallieMae and the above multi quote was in error. (I don't know how I did it.). I went back to school on the GI bill and was very thankful for it and what it did for me, personally. In some circles, I am now considered as smart as many of those of a Liberal persuasion.
