Sorry to start yet another thread but ....

I've decided to make my trip report a daily report that will last all week. Kind of like Cork and Alli's Yurapeean adventure. There's just too much information.;-)

Part 1
So last Friday we set off on our 10 1/2 hour drive to Prattville, Alabama. We were loaded with ipods, gameboys, and bunches of movies. Mr OL decided not to use the car top carrier and loaded everything up in the back of the van. Yep, beverly hills here we come.
on the drive we enjoyed watching Spring blossom right before our eyes. Everything got greener and greener as we drove south. The flowers/trees and rocky cliffs in Kentucky were really pretty.

We stopped at a very nice Chick-fila in Cool Springs Tn for lunch. I would have liked to have stayed and gone shopping in the area but we had to get back on the road!
I think our next stop was the big Rocket at the Alabama welcome center. This one is a can't miss for us every trip.

We were happy to be almost to our hotel for the night. I had made a reservation at the Jameson Inn. Mind you, we don't have those here in Ohio and I thought it was going to be a quaint little inn. We arrived and Sam said ..this is a motel not an inn. Oh, thanks dear one, I hadn't noticed.  It was fine for the night but I don't think I'd want to stay there too long. The bed was nice and comfy to that was a plus. It was a good stopping point with lots of restaurants, hotels and stores. The next morning we slept in and loaded up. Check in at the condo was 4:00 so we have plenty of time. We only had a 3 1/2 hour drive to paradise...
We took our time, stopped and bought a few necessities that we forgot to pack and arrived at the rental office at 1:30. We checked in early ( thank you Seagrove on the Beach) and headed out to the walkover at the Palms. It was really windy and overcast but breathtaking none the less. Oh, we were back to my favorite place and no matter the weather, were happy to be there.
We headed upstairs to check out our accomodations for the week. The Palms is a really nice place and we really enjoyed our stay there. We were in the second row of buildings on the third floor. We had a lovely view of 30-a and the Mer's place on one side and an amazing view of the parking lot with a sliver of the gulf off the balcony. I could hear the sea roaring and the palms wisping through the air. We were just thrilled to be there.

I was unpacking when I got a call. The Dargs were heading to Grayton. I stopped what I was doing and we started getting ready to hit the beach.

We arrived at Grayton with the wind whipping and sand blowing. We started walking down the walkover and Jenny and Mermaid we standing there waiting for us. It was so exciting to meet both of them! I thought Mermaid would have been gone and was so surprised and happy to see and meet her! Both gulls are cuter than words can say.
We walked over to their "camp" and met the boys and Kate. Bdarg & Merman were wonderful. I think I could listen to Merman talk all day. The kids played in the outflow and we talked and got to know each other. Mermaid was telling me about all the funn things they did during their week. I couldn't believe that this was our first day here and we already got to meet so many sowallers! You have to remember---I had met no one before this trip!
The Darg children are just darlings. Will is such a tall, handsome, sweet and patient young man. He had caught a beautiful blue crab and stood there freezing while I fumbled for my camera and had to get just the right shot. Princess Kate is the kind of girl you can't stop looking at b/c she is just breathtaking. They both take after their parents. The Mer's were incredibly sweet and yes, the cutest couple eva. It was a grayt day.

We went back to the condo, settled in, had sandwiches for dinner and rested up for the next day at the red bar.

For some reason, I cannot insert pics in my posts. I added pics for this day in my photo album. http://www.sowal.com/bb/gallery/browseimages.php?c=5&userid=483

Part 4

 My journal started getting a little slim by this time so my reports might not be as long as before. I have no idea what we ate for breakfast..probably donuts or poptarts. After our nutritious breakfast I sent Dylan down to the walkover to see if the flags had changed. By looking out from the balcony it looked a little more calm. he came back and they were still purple and red so we decided to packed lunches and headed up to Grayton. We ended up at the state park so we could use the restrooms there. The first thing I did was walk to the outflow area. It took about 15 minutes one way and I found quite a few shells along the shore and in the surf. I found a small complete sand dollar but dropped it and when I scooped it up again I broke it. :( The kids spent the day building more castles and salt mining as Dylan called it. It was a really good day at the beach except for the not entering the water part. The sky was a pretty shade of blue and the gulf seemed like it was calming down some. It was nice and warm too, probably in the low 80's.

We ate at Seagrove Market that night and had the grouper po boys and hush puppies. It was very good and didn't taste frozen at all. ;-)

Beachmom called and we set up a lunch date for the next day. :clap_1:

We heard that Seaside had spring break concerts on Tuesday nights so we went there after dinner. Remember that picture that SJ took of the sea of people on the lawn? We were there. We listened to the music some but walked around and went into some shops, Sundog and had ice cream at Heavenly Shortcakes. We waited in this really long line and then they were out of what we wanted. :bang: The kids were really sweet that worked there and recommended some other stuff. The fam had coconut, grapefruit and tiramisu ice cream. I had the shortcake. ( they were out of the cake batter)

After that I'm sure we hit the hay..the beach is so tiring.

Part 4

We woke up and it was going to be a gorgeous day. Dylan went down to the walkover to check the flags. He came funning back screaming it's a yellow flag!! He was just a little excited. So the boys got ready and went to the beach while Sam and I got ready to meet the girls for lunch. We stopped at Seacrest at the shops to look around. I went into the jewelry store there and I mentioned we were down from Ohio and a guy in the back came out and said he had just moved from Akron a week ago. I told him he was a lucky duck and we talked for a bit.

We had decided on Shades at the Loop for lunch. Sam and I were early so we requested a table. I had met Jdarg and Kate on Sunday and they were the first to arrive. Jenny had a whole crate;-) of earrings that Mermaid had made while she was there. It was funn looking at them. She has a real eye and talent for jewelry making. I had talked to Beachmom but hadn't met her yet. She arrived with Lil Beach and she was just like her posts and avatars...very funn and sweet and beautiful! IBD came in a minute or so later and I went up and hugged her...she was like who the heck are you???!!! I knew who she was right away from pictures. She's a hoot, very striking and has this deep sexy voice I only get when I have a sinus infection. Toots and Franny wanted to make it but couldn't. e were talking and all the sudden we had another surprise...it was Daddy-O himself. I was thrilled to meet him. Without him, none of this would be happening. Thank you Kurt. It was a grayt lunch but the beach was calling. It was the bestest beach day we had so far so we had to git!

We hauled butt back to the condo changed and hit the beach. The water was very cold but actually not as cold as you might think and isn't too bad if the air temp is above 80. I only went in up to my hips tho. The water was really really calm too calm for boogie boarding but it was funn to walk out onto the sandbar and play around there. There were actually LESS people in the water on the yellow flag days than the red ones. :bang:

That night we went to Pandora's for dinner and drove by Blue Orleans and finally got that gumbo we'd been wanting to try. That was going to be lunch for the next day. We bad beignets for dessert. Did I spell that correctly? They were good, messy but good. I know, I'm already planning on starting WW or South Beach on Monday, sowell here I come...

We also went to Destin Commons----world of the perfectly dressed and coifed teens. Could have skipped this stop but for some reason we were compelled to go. Like I mentioned before I had pulled a muscle or something in my foot and it was really hurting so we headed back to another sound, peaceful beachy sleep.

Part 5- Thursday

We woke up to pretty big weather change. I think it got cool all across the country. It was snowing in Ohio so 60's wasn't bad in Sowal but it was a little chilly for the beach. Beachmom and I made plans for our kids to meet in the afternoon. She was going to take my kids while Mr OL and I spent some time alone together. The morning was cool so we made a plan. Looking back...should have went to the beach anyway but we decided to head into Destin. I wanted to take the kids to the harbour and have a fresh seafood lunch...Dewie Destins came to mind if we could find it.
So we started out. We passed the sign that said Eden State Gardens and decided to stop in. We didn't have time to take the tour but did take a good look around and got some of my best pictures of the trip. It was a beautiful sunny day but just cool.
We hit the road again and stopped at the outlet mall...jeesh, just crowds of people...everyone and their sister were there. I had to get a baby gift since we were seeing a new neice as soon as we got home for Easter. We did that as quickly as possible and then started towards Destin. Traffic was really backed up miles and miles, we made a turn off into Miramar Beach. Man, I thought I'd entered the twilight zone...soooo different with these little motorized trikes on the roads and scooters, high rises and chairs and umbrellas like a foot apart..it was just so different. We never found a place to eat, ended up running late to see Beachmom but needed to feed the kids before we dropped them off so we stopped at subway then drove to Beachmom's house near Eastern Lake. We got there and met the kids and Beachmom's sister who was visiting along with her neice. Beachmom's sis was a doll just like her. Our kids really got along well. Beachmom gave us a tour of their house ( gorgeous) and the best part was I got to see her art in person! and her studio on the top floor of the house with an amazing view of the gulf!!! She is so talented, it just floors me.
Mr OL and I took off for a couple hours. We still hadn't eaten lunch so that's what we were going to do. It was either Wild Olives or Shades at the Loop and we ended up at Shades. We parked our van right out front and started walking in. A couple was walking out and I noticed a Gators sweatshirt and orange crocs right away but didn't put two and two together...can you guess who it was? Mr OL had an OSU shirt on and he thought the woman was making a wisecrack about OSU but really she said something about sowal...she had seen our sowal sticker on the van and the Ohio plates. I turned around right away and knew it was Beachrunner. I gave her a big hug. It was so nice to meet her and big D. She recommended the wings and did not steer me wrong....mmm, they were good. We had a good lunch, stopped at a few shops and headed back to get the kiddos. We got there and I don't think they really wanted to leave. They loved their new friends. :D
We got back to the condo and I took a walk down to the beach...it was so beautiful. I ran back up and made everyone put their warm clothes and jackets on and come down. The water had cleared and was even more calm it was like WOW.I'll let my pictures tell the rest. I'm also adding a picture of our girls lunch from the day before. ;-)

One more day left in paradise...

Final Installment

Today was a very chilly day but darned if we weren't going to hit the beach anyway. We were going home tomorrow and it was so sunny and the water was at it's peak of beauty. I'm mad at myself b/c I didn't take more pictures on this day. I took a walk in the morning and snapped a few but when we went down for the day I didn't bring my camera with me. I didn't realize my other pics weren't all that grayt at the time.

We got back in the afternoon and Steele mama had left me a message. We had planned to meet up sometime on Friday. She was going to be at the pink house and we were planning on eating at Amore so I told her we would stop by. Mr OL was like...do you know where you're going? Do you have an address, directions? No, I said but I think I can find it. ;-) We only made one wrong turn in Grayton and eventually found it. SM met us at the door and made us feel at home right away. She's just like her posts, I  her and her family but I knew I would. Steeleing 1 & 4 were there and Grayton Kid too. Dylan and GK hit it off and were off to play Club Penguin on the computer. I had envisioned that if they ever met it would be surfing the waves and not surfing the internet.
SM gave us the tour of the lodge and it was really cool to see and hear the history. Steeleing 4 will be heading up my way this summer and we talked about that. SM called Amory for the sowall word of the day so we could use it for dinner. We would have loved to have been able to spend more time but we all had places to go and people to see! SM was off to the Rep for another show.

We had dinner at Amores and really loved the pizza. So bummed that we didn't have it earlier in the week so we could try different kinds.

The rest of the evening was spent packing and getting ready to go home. We left at 4:30 the next morning.

I really loved meeting everyone  and it makes me sad to even type this. I feel like I'm missing my family. I've always been sad to leave the beach before but this time it was reallly different. I hate being so far away.:(

Nice final installment OL. It really is hard to leave the beach knowing it will be a while before we get back, isn't it? Maybe the song I Left My Heart In San Francisco should be changed to "I Left My Heart in SoWal."
