That has been all over the news here. There is going to be a panel discussion at the law school next month about this and other customs which are illegal in this country but widespread and accepted in other countries. I took an elective on contemporary global issues and I had to do a project on female genital mutilation (FGM). I tend to not be a cultural relativst, but this is by far a very very disheartening practice.

we studied this is one of my sociology classes i think it was. it just makes me sick for those poor girls, esp. where it is an accepted part of the culture and they don't know any better.

I also saw on my CNN homepage yesterday where a 19 yo son raped his mother in Ala. That has to be a first. Talk about a sick and dysfunctional family. She was passed out drunk on the couch & then came to. (shivers up my spine)

too sad for words. The most horrible part is the sickness, if what the father says is true, and the sickness if what the mother says is true! It is all very sick, and I feel most sorry for the poor victim child....

i thought the same thing - there had to be blood, i'm sure some swelling, and definitely some pain - is the mother stupid or what ???

...or lying about her role, knowledge, what have you, in this tragedy. It absolutely sickens me. I remember my 7th grade art teacher, Mrs. Pate, had a former student come in to talk to us about his travels to Africa. He told us about female circumcision and I have never forgotten his stories. It is one of the cruelest things I can imagine.
If you have a penis and are thinking about responding with something about male circumcision, don't bother. It is totally not the same, unless you were to have your entire penis lopped off at the base. That would be comparable.Checking your forum account
