I am in tears. Our fur baby Mo is dying. I need some consoling. Don't care if I spell that right. There is something going on in his brain they think. I am so sad. Had a gut feeling I needed to come home today and check on him as he wasn't acting normal last night and not normal this morning. Found him under a thicket down in the back yard having a seizure. His blood sugar was low at 39, so they thought that is what it was. His sugar is now normal. Stopped by the vet after work to see him and he had already had another severe seizure. Don't understand it. We saw no signs of this yesterday. I am having to go pick him up by 6:00 and take him to the Animal Emergency Center by myself over on Summer Ave. so they can hook him back up to the IV's and monitor him overnight and treat him if he seizes again. And then in the morning I have to go back over there and pick him up and take him back to the vet to stay for the day. Husband doesn't want to put him down. The vet says there is no hope for him. That something bad is going on. I literally had to pry his mouth open this morning to get his pills down him. I am terrified to death he will have a seizure in the car on the way to the emergency clinic. What does everyone else recommend??? I am heartbroken.

LadyD, I know how tough this can be. Several years ago I had a nice hyperactive German Shepherd dog that developed persistant diarrhea and weight loss. I tried every trick a good medical student could, but to no avail. After several trips to the best vet I have ever known (he was brilliant, he knew as much physiology and pharmacology as any allopathic physician and best of all didn't try to sell me a bunch of junk like most vets I have encountered, but that is another issue) we threw our arms up in diagnostic failure. She kept losing weight, and we both knew she had cancer somewhere, we just couldn't figure out where. It came to the point where the decision was send her to the LSU vet school for a gastroenterology evaluation or euthanize her. Both my vet and I knew that with her cachexia, the diagnosis would probably be academic as much as anything else and offer no assistance in treatment. So Punz and I drove her to the vet to be put to sleep, and it was so hard because although the 70 pound dog had wasted to about 35 pounds or so, she never lost her energy or mentation. On the drive I had the window down so she could let her head outside the car and have the wind rush through her ears. While we were at a red light, an ambulance came by with sirens blaring, and my poor dog started howling like a wolf as she always did when she heard a siren...it was AWFUL to think this dog that was so alert, alive and playful was about to be put to sleep. We got to the vets office and I held my dog while the vet gave her the potassium;she went peacefully without any pain whatsoever. I still felt pretty bad about it, and my vet asked if he could do a postmortem exam to make the diagnosis, and I told him of course. Later that day he phoned and told me she had lymphoma throughout her digestive tract, and her intestines were so thin and friable that they could have perforated at any time, and this would have caused the poor girl excruciating pain and suffering. We did the right thing, and that was a huge comfort. I really missed that dog and know how big the void is going to be, and the only words of comfort I can offer is that I am sure you are doing the right thing and your dog thanks you for it...Punzy and I are thinking about you

Hey everyone, we are back. Just got in about 20 minutes ago to a now pet empty house for the first time. It has been a very sad, tiring and draining day. Mo left us this morning at 7:50 a.m. and is now buried down in the country next to his momma and very close to his daddy. He died a peaceful quick death. Just a matter of 2 or 3 minutes. My husband and I both shed tears after he passed this morning and now we are realizing how much we hate he is not here, especially my husband. He said it has hit him now. He was a good dog and my husband stated he loved him the most. But we had to do this for him to let him go. After we got him in the car this morning he suffered another seizure. We are so blue. I now have the task of putting away and getting rid of his things. We have kept his collar and it is hanging next to his momma's. I had already put away some things last night. It is near the end of a very sad day.

Oh, I am sure she is showing Mo the ropes by now. My theory is that in dog heaven there is an abundance of squirrels...and a shortage of trees!

And our Mo loved to chase squirrels and did plenty of hiking his leg on the trees.

Love you LadyD and love and belly rubs forever to your MO.

There may not be many trees for those squirrels to scramble up, but there are plenty of fire hydrants in need of 'extinguishing'!:clap_1:

So sorry, LadyD. Coming home to an empty house is the worst. Enjoy your memories of that wagging tail! I even feel like something is missing when I come home and know they are somewhere else like the groomers.

That is a grayt vision of heaven! My dogs so diligently think they will catch a squirrel or a bird and a lack of trees might do the trick on the squirrels!

we gave away some of dory's things to uncle shawn, and to the help shelter ( a no-kill shelter here in town) we still have a lot of her stuff i am just not ready to let go of yet.

The things we definitely are keeping of his is his collar, his two food bowls, and his paw print tennis ball I bought him. And probably his dog house of course. We had Sapphire's dog house for two years and I finally gave it to this man at church back in December who had just acquired a dog whose owner moved off and left it. It is a Jack Russell Terrier mix that he named Scooter. A sweet looking dog. And that owner needs to be beaten for moving off and leaving his dog. The man that has him now even called him and told him he had his dog and he never came for him. Didn't deserve him anyway. Even though I am sad over this empty house, without our fur baby, it will be long time before we can even think about another dog, maybe never. Especially after having to deal with cancer and diabetes in two dogs over a 3 year period. And the loss of them both. Mo's was the hardest loss because of what we had to do.

So sorry about Mo...![]()
Maybe we need to start a SoWal dog thread- like the Grayton Dog Wall. An official listing of our pets, their pics, and a special section for when they pass on.
jdarg - I was just catching up on this sad thread, thinking about how much we've all shared our beloved pets with one another on this board. we've shared happy stories, funny things, pictures, we've all shared advice on pet food, medicine, toys, etc. and we've shared the passing of many our family pets. I was thinking that it would be wonderful to have a thread to honor these sowal pets. and then I saw your post!!! we love our pets with all our hearts. why not dedicate a thread or two to them? want to get it started?
Lady D - I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Mo. It will be hard getting used to a home without him. I'm glad you had him and gave him a happy and safe life, and I'm sure he gave you much happiness too! the very reason we keep dogs and pets in our lives...
its always hard to let them go. I'm thinking of your family.SoWal InsiderAuthor
Thanks Tootsie. I made sure I got out some today just to get away from the house. And I will be out a good bit of the day tomorrow as it is Easter and will be eating Easter lunch with family. My husband has to work tomorrow. Mo did give us much joy and he had a wonderful home and life with us for 13 years, as did his Momma Sapphire. She gave us the same joy. We chose not to come to the beach last summer as we did not want to board him away at the vet for 9 days due to how he acted two years ago when we brought him home after getting back from the beach. He howled downstairs in the basement every night for 4 nights after that and we had to bring him upstairs to sleep. That was the first time he had been boarded alone since his Momma's death. That is why we chose the state park for vacation twice last year as we could take him with us. Cannot even think about whether we will make the beach later this summer either. Too early to think about anything like that after just losing our dog. That won't take away the pain and grief. Time will though hopefully.

LadyD, I guess you can tell from almost every post in your thread that we all have something in common....we've lost a dear companion or two. It doesn't make things better for you now, and only time can heal that. But our thoughts are with you....grieve when you can, take your time, rest, but get out too. Whatever one needs to do at this time is acceptable! May Easter bring a special peace to you this year.
Our thoughts are with you and your husband. What a kind thing to do for the man with the Jack Russell dog that was left behind. That's what I call Pay It Forward.
Peace....Kat
