last night about 6 pm, some punk went into the cvs where my hubby works (thank goodness he was off yesterday) and demanded oxycontin. someone in the store called 911, the police came, the punk ended up pulling a shotgun on the pharmacist and one of the deputies, and the 2nd deputy shot and killed the punk. my hubby is so worked up he can't hardly think straight. he is seriously thinking about quitting. he asked if we could make it on one income, i said no but.... you gotta do what you gotta do. it just makes me so angry that people who are just trying to help others are put in danger every day like this over something so stupid. there, i am off my soapbox now...

OMG Audie!! that is AWFUL!!! why , how, just does not make sense....needless addiction...gets the kid killed....and for what?...it is a real form of suicide!!!
If he is that worked up...maybe he should find another job? I know it is not easy...but the quality of life...no more stress! You both will live longer...and HAPPIER!!!!! What price do you put on your inner happiness? Change can be a good thing!

he is seriously considering a career move - but doesn't know to what. he will probably be doing a lot of thinking while on vacation about stuff. the bad thing is every place around here has the potential to be robbed, and they are doing it in broad daylight now. who knows what the answer is :idontno:

Glad to know he wasn't injured physically, but what a scary experience! Maybe you can find jobs while you are on vacation in SoWal...then everyday would be a vacation!

Audie,

That is so sad and maddening! As Allifunn said - change can be a good thing. Maybe this was just the last shove? :idontno:

Audie,

How horrible! 😱 I too am so happy Mr. Audie wasn't working at the time this took place. I feel for everyone that was an innocent bystander to this horrific tragedy.

Making a life change is always difficult. Regardless of the circumstances. I'll keep you both in my thoughts. Hopefully, some good ol' SoWal time will be helpful in making the next step easier to make. Look forward to meeting you both soon. Take care!

Audie, how very unsettling to be so close to a murder. It gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about what could have happened. Thank goodness you are coming up to your SoWal vacation. I know you need the time away more than ever.

I'm confused though about this OxyContin. I know it's a narcotic similar to morphine, but what's the attraction if it's not used for pain? I mean, if you're not in pain, what does it do to you? Why would people steal and place their lives in jeopardy for it? :idontno: Forgive me for being such a dummy but I honestly don't get it.

it is very very potent, i guess it provides a high for people even those not in pain and it's very addicting. and people who are addicted by it off the streets to avoid going to a dr to get a prescription. it is a very high market item in this area, esp. with richmond being located right smack dab between indy and dayton.

thank you everyone for your kind thoughts, you are a great bunch of peeps !!

who knows what mr audie will decide - i am staying out of it, because i don't want to influence him and have him blame me if he doesn't like it. i feel like that's a decision he needs to make on his own.

That's really sad, to want/need something so bad that you'd ruin your life for it...and others who are innocently involved.

Take my caffeine away from me and see how I react. ;-) I am not likely to pull a shotgun on the Starbucks clerk, but addictions are nasty little things that ruin many good people. People will do anything to get their fix. I know several people who are heavily addicted to pot. They don't smoke to get high, they smoke to get through their day. I know only three people who are hooked on Oxycontin, two of which are totally messed up. One recently had a stroke and wouldn't let his daughter take him to the emergency room. He wants to die. One of the other two likes to sample many drugs to get high. Recently he had a heart attack and had to undergo heart surgery to have stints inserted into his heart. This guy is maybe 38. I will refrain from telling the terrible story of the third person I personally know who is hooked on Oxy after having been given scripts for it to make it through back surgery. His is the saddest story of the three. Two of these people were written legit scripts to recovery from surgery, the third just likes to get puddled from drugs. All three of these individuals were extremely successful and driven business people and one still is. The other two, that is a different and sad story of loss, hurt, self-destruction, anger, sorrow, misery, pain and suffering.

a lot of times i think dr's get so busy they don't pay as close attention to their patients as they should. they just keep giving them prescriptions for oxycontin and other addicting meds to keep the patient happy and quiet. the addicts around here tend to choose these drs. we have also had several cases in the area of the dr's being in with the patients, and they write prescriptions for cash made from the sale of the illicit drugs. i don't know what the answer to all of it is.

Some people abuse oxy as a form of entertainment. My daughter has basketball injuries to her back from high school and MIT basketball. Now that Vioxx and Celebrex and Bextra are no longer alternatives (and they never helped her much anyhow), all she has is oxy. I see the insurance claims since we're paying for her health insurance, and she doesn't use as much as her prescription allows. But when she's in pain, it's the only thing that works.

Sorry, Audie, about your husband. It's really sad that pharmacists need security guards to protect them from people who take oxy for thrills.

that is so true - a lot of kids take some oxy then drink til they pass out, unfortunately some of them don't wake up. like i said, it's a shame that a few people have turned a drug that is very useful for lots of people in chronic debilitating pain into something so bad.

i'm sorry to hear your daughter has back problems - that is certainly no fun. my mom recently quit taking the celebrex for her arthritis because of all the problems with the cox-2 inhibitors.
