Dust first or vacuum first?

Great question - I dust first and then vacuum only because I hate seeing dust particles fly AFTER i have vacuumed!

Dust first because dusting knocks small particulate to the ground which your vacuum can catch. Chickpea has a good point though.

Do you wipe down your counters prior to sweeping the floor?

Cleaning should always be done, Top - Down, unless you like a dirty house. When dusting, if you really want to vacuum the dust, it is best done several hours prior to vacuuming, because most of it will be floating in the air, and want be on the carpet immediately after dusting, unless you have big chunks of dust.

Edit: Keep this in mind if the argument is between you and your spouse. Dr Phil says, "you can be right, or, you can be happy." A lesson learned is that a good marriage may come at a small sacrifice of proper cleaning procedure.

At our house I dust then vacuum. I used to do it opposite but FBB said that was the wrong way. He concludes, vacuuming stirs up dust.

Now that I think about it, this is the same man, when asked, "what do you use to dust?" Replied, "an old pair of underwear. " I was in his apartment for the first time and was amazed that one apartment could actually hold that much dust.

So in retrospect, my answer now is, dust then vacuum.

I do wipe all my counters off prior to cleaning the bathroom and kitchen floors. I didn't ask or receive any expert opinions from him on this matter.

The absolute best dusting tools are the microfiber "Miracle" cloths from Solutions. There are knockoffs at other stores but the Solutions ones are the best I've used. They really grab the dirt! They go in the washing machine when you are done and require no chemicals, so they are environmentally friendly also. :clap_1:

I tend to vacuum first because it makes for immediate gratification -- the dog hair is gone and I immediately feel better. Then I use the microfiber cloth to pick up anything left over. The dust doesn't get all scattered around when you use the microfiber cloths.

Dust first or vacuum first?

DD, doesn't look like you're the first to ask. I think this is one of those Chicken Or Egg kind of questions.

I am with SJ on this one all the way. Clean top to bottom. I wouldn't bother with the arguing part though. If it is your sig. other, by all means allow him to do it his way and then secretly go behind him and do a light dusting. Only to the low tables and such, shelves wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Sorry mom  , but I vacuum first--I do think it stirs up dust! :)
OR--we could do it the Just Jason way--which would be to pull out the attachment on the vacuum and DUST WHILE YOU VACUUM. . .
he's so efficient. :clap_1:

(did i spell vacuum right?)

Kingfishn, funny you mention that because I just whip out the shop vac and dust and vacuum all at once. ;-) However, I've always wanted a house with big roll-up walls (like garage doors, but different) so that I could use a leaf blower and blow everything outside.

:lolabove: I am LMAO because that is exactly what MANgo had out this morning sitting on the back deck. :funn:

Yesterday spent the day cleaning, was going to have a baby crawling around, so spent extra attention to the hardwood floors.

MANgo: Do you want me to mop?
ME: Well I vacuumed the floors really well with the vacuum that could suck up a mole from a hole, and mopped a few days ago. But if you want to mop it again, be my guest.
MAN-go: Do you need the baby gate?
Me: Yes, where did you put it?

Wake up to an industrial sized bucket that could hold enuf water for a small swimming pool, a mop that I would have needed a crane to lift.
Me:

Then I hear banging, and out comes a homemade baby gate he made out of wood that matches the stairwell which is being attached to my wall with nails.

To say the least, I had very clean floors done in about 3 minutes, and NO ONE could get past the baby gate. :floor:

Some great points being made here. From your posts, I have come to the following conclusion: Never learn to do it properly if you don't want to be the one always doing it, no matter what the task may be.

Well, SJ, it wasn't really an argument, just a friendly wager. Mr. dd told me to ask y'all. I'm not quite sure WHY he wanted to know, since he is NEVER the one who vacs or dusts. But I will be happy to report that the general concensus was with my method. Has he not learned by now that I'm always right??:floor:
Audie, I need more hard core instruction....haven't learned yet..
RO..
And SJ, from your last post, I think mr. dd figured that one out a long time ago.. :bang: :D :floor:

That's why Mr. OM does the dusting, vacuuming AND has a HUGE industrial size mop bucket that he mops the rest of the house while I have the kiddies elsewhere!:floor: :floor: :floor: :floor: :floor:

BTW, he dusts & vacuums every d*** day! ;-)

If you wanted him to do your house every other day, rather than every day, he is welcome to come vacuum and dust my house on the off days.

BTW, what does he think about being called, "Mr. Organic Mama?" :floor: That will teach him for being a rockstar. :funn:
