The St. Joe Community Foundation recently approved a $250,000 grant award for The Point Washington Medical Clinic (PWMC). Funds will be used towards technology, medical equipment and supplies for a stand alone facility. The new 4,750 square foot building includes space for six examination rooms, a conference area, testing kitchen, meeting room, dental suite with a separate entrance/exit, dispensary, and inviting lobby with an educational library.
New services and programming planned will include preventative care, primary care, wellness care and more. This will transform the clinic into a "one-stop shop" for comprehensive care for our patients, continuing our mission of providing quality primary care, while expanding to include specialty services, dentistry and wellness education.
PWMC was co-founded by Patsy Vargo, M.D., a retired family medicine physician and rural health specialist and Hillary Glenn, DNP, APRN-BC, a provider at a local urgent care center. From their experiences, they both saw our community’s need for an inservice medical clinic and immediately solicited community support and recruited volunteers.
PWMC launched in April 2017 as a one day per week, no-fee for service, volunteer driven, pop-up, primary care clinic operating in the fellowship hall of the Point Washington United Methodist Church. The expansion is a direct response to the growing needs of the community. During the clinic’s short tenure, they have responded swiftly to direct needs during both Hurricane Michael and the COVID-19 pandemic and increased their capacity to offer three days per week. Since the PWMC opened its doors, the team has seen over 8,500 patients and saved them more than the equivalent of $2M in healthcare dollars.
“We are incredibly grateful to the St. Joe Community Foundation! We love our home in Point Washington and are thrilled for this opportunity to broaden the scope of our services and continue our natural evolution into a comprehensive care clinic,” explains Executive Director Hillary Glenn. “We anticipate this new facility will allow us to serve 800+ patients per month, which is an increase of 300%. We are excited to continue serving and treating our community by guiding our patients towards optimal wellness, rather than always being on the defensive.”
