Politifact listed Reason as well as some others that had rebuttals regarding their selection of top "lie of the year" along with sources that agreed with them. It's their site, their choice, for what it's worth. To me a lie is a lie pretty much.

Merry Christmas Shopper - I appreciate and learn from your posts!

Thanks Rita and Merry Christmas! I just scrolled through the list- and plan on emailing to the next person that forwards a dumb email to me, as the list covers pretty much most of the ignorant emails floating around, as well as quite a few of the Tea Party rants.

I love the comments/assessments!

"Wrong, wrong, and wrong again."

"No facts were harmed in the writing of this email."

"Fake story, wrong court procedure, bogus outcome."

"Not even close."

"Laws of biology and immigration say a resounding no."

"Not according to our dictionary."

And my fave "we take this stuff seriously so you don't have to."
But the bigger issue here is the claim that the bill bans incandescent light bulbs.

Sec. 321 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 spells out the new standards, essentially requiring that light bulbs be 25 percent more efficient than they are now. Specifically, a 100 watt light bulb is to be replaced with a bulb using no more than 72 watts of electricity while still providing comparable light output. The 75-watt, 60-watt and 40-watt bulbs must be replaced by bulbs using no more than 53, 43 and 29 watts respectively. The law phased in the new requirements: first the replacements for the 100-watt bulbs by Jan. 1, 2012; followed by the lower watt bulbs in ensuing years.

The curlicue compact fluorescent bulbs and LED light bulbs easily meet the new efficiency standards. But we couldn't find any language in the law that specifically bans incandescent bulbs.
This is why I question politifact, they know full well that this legislation did outlaw the sale of conventional incandescent by raising energy standards far beyond the potential of these types of bulbs. That was the whole point of the legislation. But they consider the statement "democrats voted to ban incandescent light bulbs" a pant-on-fire lie? Sorry, I call b.s., this doesn't qualify for me. It should be a half-truth.

Make this comment to Politifact. I have seen several replies from them to people who have substantiated disagreements with their findings, and sometimes they have changed it to reflect some "reconsideration."
I admire them for doing that. And many times they stick to their guns, so to speak. All in all they provide a very good service and appear to be open to rebuttals and rechecks.

Not bad, out of 150+ truth-o-meter comments you disagree with a light bulb issue.>

Zebraspots

They didn't ban incandescent light bulbs, they are phasing out standard incandescent light bulbs that don't meet the efficency standards.

Many incandescent bulbs are exempt and any incandescent that meets the standard is allowed.

No standard incandescent bulb within the wattage range targeted by the legislation will be allowed after the law fully takes effect. The sales of exempted specialty lamps (like three-ways) will be monitored and if sales reach a certain target, they too will be subject to the regulation. This law effectively bans the sale of standard incandescent bulbs with very few exceptions - after 2014, you will not be able to walk into a grocery story and pick up a 40, 60, 75, or 100 watt incandescent bulb. The sale or importation of these types of bulbs will be a federal crime. That's a ban, no matter how much spin you want to put on it.
