Oct 20-Nov 1, 2008 (Mon-Sat, 8:30AM-4:30PM)-Early Voting for General Election

Nov 4, 2008-General Election

Florida is still a Closed Primary State. This means you must be registered in a recognized party to vote that primary ballot. There is an exception to this in that a Universal Primary Contest is when only one party qualifies candidates in a race. When this occurs, that race will appear on all ballots in the County. We have 3 Universal Primary Contests on the August 26th Primary Ballot, Superintendent of Schools, County Commissioner District 3, and County Commissioner District 5. These 3 races will appear on the Democratic, Republican, and Nonpartisan ballots in the Primary. Nonpartisan races will be on all County Ballots.

People from Arkansas make their residence in Florida so that they don't have to pay state income tax. I have two friends whose "residence" is Sandestin.

I have a feeling that they would be making a better financial decision to vote here as well. Pass the word.

I don't understand why folks are so upset. Seems like some sour grapes and/or assuming the worst. That's not helpful to the political process. Although it is weird because I assume she owns a computer and maybe has been on this site and I'm wondering why she wouldn't join the other candidates with discussion on here. Is it a snub to people who live in SoWal?

Good point. Forgot all about FL's no State Income Tax. Why else would Tiger Woods claim residency in FL? Millions in savings from high earnings.

wrobert, I understand that you and Wilkerson will be going into a runoff in November. What qualifies candidates to have a run-off? Are there other races which are also having a run-off in Walton County?

Doesn't look like any changes of winners in the final tally, but the percentages are much different than the unofficial 90%-in, shown in post #2.

(final Complete Summary here)

County Commissioner Dist 5
Total Number of Precincts 33
Precincts Reporting 33 100.0 %
Times Counted 10287/35186 29.2 %
Total Votes 9846
Sidney A. "Sid" Brau REP 1040 10.56%
Robert 'Bob' Hudson REP 2354 23.91%
Cecilia Jones REP 3552 36.08%
Alan Osborne REP 2364 24.01%
George Wallace Smith REP 536 5.44%

Alan Osborne received only ten more votes than Bob Hudson, and Cecilia's dropped 4% from post #2

Now if you want to see the break-down of voters by area and candidate, click here. Note the District 5, BCC race on page 7 of 11. It is amazing to me that in each voting district in South Walton, Alan Osborne beat Cecilia Jones, including Santa Rosa Beach and Miramar Beach, the two sections which compose the District 5 seat. If that ain't just poliTRICKS at its finest, I don't know what is. I repeat, in each and every voting district in South Walton, Alan received more votes than Cecilia Jones. Tell me the system ain't broken. :idontno:

I got no sympathy. If the majority decided to be indifferent to voting, then we must deal with Jones. It's nobody's fault but our own.

I can understand why people don't attend BCC (and other gov) meetings: they are boring, long, ineffiicient and at night when people have children to get to bed, or need to get to bed ourselves to get up for work the next day.

I do not understand why people do not vote: you can do it early; we don't have to drive very far; there are no long lines; early voting is on a weekend. Heck, you can even do it by absentee ballot the Supervisor of Elections will mail to you!

IMO there is really no excuse except people are just irresponsible.:bang:

We send our men and women to wars to fight and die for the freedom for others to get the vote; and for U. S. citizens to keep that right...it seems the least the rest of us could do, is appreciate the right we have and the responsibility that goes along with it. The apathy makes me angry!

Rant Over...

I think from the turnout we can assume people just don't care so they shouldn't be able
to complain but I am sure they will. People stand in line for hours to vote, are shot at and
have to walk miles to the polls in other countries. And we can't even show up in our
air conditioned oversized vehicles and walk right in and mark a ballot.

Very concerned about the state of the county and hope Dst. 5 doesn't get treated like the old days, i.e; red headed step child.

Kudos to those who ran positive campaigns. Am dissapointed at those who thought
the best way to win was to go negative instead of talking about the issues facing our county..................Am even more dissapointed at the rumors I heard about paying for
votes, disrepecting people's property, getting in fights, and generally running what
one person already said............good ole Holmes County politicing.

We need to do better.

Okay so how do we start the process of a recall election of Cecilia Jones?

My friend, I am as disappointed as anyone, however, this is a democracy and the people have spoken. It would therefore be incumbent on each of us to support those who won and give them a fair chance to perform the duties to which they have been chosen. If they suprise us, we all win, if they do as we fear, then we have another shot in four years to fix it. But we should give all of the winners a fair shot at winning us over.

And before anyone bemoans the low turnout, those who cared voted, those who did not vote obviously do not care whatever the result.

I think you can tell by the low turn out at the regular BCC meetings that people don't care about their local gov't enough to show up. It really isn't surprising that they don't show up at the polls.

I don't show up at BCC and other meetings because of the little 2 year old that's usually on my hip. However, he was on our hips at the polls & the little ladies were loving it & wanting to take him home with them.
