Thank you, all of you for your well wishes. I think I am going to make it. Here is the skeery part of what the doctor told me. I am sure skunky can elaborate. He told me that it is not usually the influenza that kills people, but the secondary infections that they get caused by the unfluenza, if they wait too long to go to the doctor and start meds, such as lung infections and pneumonia. I had already gotten the bad respitory infection. It had not turned in to pnuemonia yet. So I am glad I went to the doctor, even though it took all I had in me to get there. This is scary. And it is not too late to get the shot. When I am completely well, I am going to get mine!!! Take care everyone!!!

This is correct. The viruses that cause the 'flu' tear up the lining of the airway, allowing other pathogens like bacteria to access the damaged site and 'set up shop'. Additionally, the mechanisms to protect our airway that are intact during health are compromised during the infection. Many times we give people antibiotics when they have the flu as insurance against a secondary bacterial pneumonia. Here is my other bit of advice-have everyone over the age of 65 recieve the pneumonia vaccine. You only need it every five years unlike the yearly flu shot.

Feel better soon KDW! Remember I had it back in October before "FLU Season" began. I was shocked when I was told I had the flu. I thought I was going to die. The aches and pains were the worst. I could not get comfortable.

Bless your heart! Glad you are feeling better. I've had my flu shot (plus a pneumonia shot and a tetanus booster), but I don't think my husband and son went for theirs. I will follow up.

Even though you are feeling better, please take it easy a few more days.

For those in the SoWal area, the Walton County Health Dept did have the vaccine in their annex office a couple of weeks ago. It was free to us; not sure about the general public but I think so.

i feel for ya kdw - i got the actual influenza earlier this year and thought i was gonna die, i have never been so sick in my life. when i finally got back to work after missing 3 days, was talking to the e.r. docs and they said i got lucky and had a milder case since i had received the flu shot - a milder case  . if i never get the flu again it will be too soon. now i am an even bigger germaphobe than before !
