Bill that would regulate commercial parasailing moves through first Senate committee | Florida politics blog: The Buzz | tampabay.com & St. Petersburg Times
Here we are going to regulate para sailing but not the pill mills. Obviously para sailing is not a big lobby or maybe doesn't belong to the Chamber or is not in an associated medical field or maybe did not give enough money and so on and so on.

Until I saw the massive insurance policy they would have to buy, it looked like common sense rules to keep people from getting killed.

We know who has the $$$.

Its a regulation and you know how Governor Scott feels about regulation. His arguement it will be a job killer, screw those who would get hurt.

Let's look at the bill's sponsor shall we?

Dennis L. Jones ran unopposed in 2008 in his district, but still raised:

$283,679.00

Most of that from corporations, most of whom are based and operate outside of his district.

That's the kind of regulation government has an important role in. Regulation can be good and bad - bad regulation attempts to control the population to promote some sort of political agenda. Good regulation is purely humanitarian and is backed by solid evidence lives will be saved. I'd say the kite surfing regs are the latter. Seat belt laws (I'll get in trouble for this with my libertarian friends for this) are also an example of good regulation.

This makes good sense as do most everything you present to us. The idea of good regulation is to be sure the other guy as well as yourself is protected and helped. The seat belt example is a perfect one, though as you say, many do not agree with it because it takes away from their "freedom" even though that "freedom" could cost you and I. I've lived with "seat belts and body harnesses" all my life and I can personally attest to the fact that they are lifesavers.

Yet regulating pill mills preventing the distribution of abused meds by suspect physicians to doctor shopping drug seeker is not a good regulation. Texting and driving being regulated is an infingement, at least that is how I understand Representative Patronis believes.

From what I've read about the pill mill database apparently there were concerns that it would not be effective. :idontno:

I'm not sure about the texting thing, but I don't think I'd have an issue with Walton County passing an ordinance against it. Sounds dangerous. I'm not proponent of talking on cell phone ban laws though. That seems a bit extreme.

Do you take your eyes off the road when dialing a cell phone?

If I'm driving and my cell phone rings, I hand it to my wife. If I'm alone, I don't answer it. I never dial a number while I'm driving. We would be much safer on the road if others did the same.

there may be more to the Governor's opposition to the regulation of pill mills than is readily apparent.

Yeah, I figured his ties to healthcare may have been part of the issue.

Donation

Yeah, I figured his ties to healthcare may have been part of the issue.

Ties to healthcare and a HUGE Donation from a major Rx company, I think it was Pizer or one of the big ones.

The Rx Monitoring Program (PMP) would be very effective. It condenses already available info from every pharmacy. This is not information protected by HIPAA regulation. Law Enforcement can get it very easily, it becomes difficult and costly (your tax dollars) when doctor shoppers cross juristictional lines. The program would provide information such as multiple fills for a Scheduled Narcotics within a 30 day period. It does NOT give the medical reason for the medication ie. persons medical history, just a receipt of the medicaiton, doctor and dates. Very important to help fight Rx Drug Abuse.

Attorney's for the large Rx Company's are always sure to know what is being discussed in FL due to Sunshine Laws...
